About this destilado de agave

Maguey Melate Sierra Negra from Everardo López Diego was originally released as the July 2024 Mezcalero of the Month Club agave spirit. Due to the cold temperatures in this region of Oaxaca, mezcaleros will often add wood shavings, Tepehuaje, to the fermentation. That’s the case for this mezcal.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Earth, Fruit and Fire! This one is awesome. I love most clay distillations but this one is so good, not overpowering with the “clayness”. I would put this one up there with an all-time favorite Lalocura San Marteño. Not as a comparison, just how much I like them.
The aroma was coming off my clay copita from two feet away as I began my notes. Strong aroma of earth, some tropical fruit, mint, cantaloupe and green apple. Wonderful!
Taste is thick and oily with an immediate presence of bursting flavor that is lightly sweet, earthy and a really good peach.
The finish is not Smokey—but good campfire and a wee tingly.
Overall great balance, body and finish with this one. Home run from Maguey Melate! 4.75
I am always chicken to give something 5 stars. I will do a side by side with some others and adjust up if need be.

Batch EVE-SIE-002. The aromas are a mix of berries and cream. Notes of blueberries, red raspberries, and strawberry cheesecake. The palate has notes of fried patacones, mustard seeds, BBQ sauce spices, Worcestershire sauce, and hard shaved cheeses. There’s also this funky, rootsy, earthy element of clay and wet leaves. This is a really solid release from a producer and town that don’t get much attention. Really enjoying this!

Fruity & pungent smell! Reminds me of an alto or raicilla…def. not this Oaxacan mezcal! Sweet and tangy on the taste – like a type of chalky candy. Strawberries, ripe banana, candy corn, and some bbq smoke notes. Very solid and different!

Nose: Berry fruits, kiwi, tangy and sour, as it sits I get some slightly cheesy elements and a bit of mint, you can tell this had a longer ferment,

Palate & Finish: Fruits on the front of palate, a bit of banana, ripe strawberries, then the clay and earth comes in, ripe tomatoes, bbq sauce, a bit of parmesan, really nice clay minerality on the exit. wet red soil, gravel dust, cocoa powder, and charred peppers to finish it off

This stuff is very good. I’m partial to clay Americana and this lives up to my expectations. Plenty of fruity, earthy, and some of that long ferment tanginess. Great pick from MM.

Being from the same town I can’t help but compare this one to the 5S Alberto Sierra Negra bottling. By themselves they remind me of each other but tasting them together brings out some really cool differences. This one leans into the earthy cheesy side while that is like liquid fruit punch.
