About this mezcal

Paquera Barril is made with maguey Barril in Ejutla, Oaxaca. The agave used in this mezcal are cooked in an underground pit oven, mashed by horse-drawn tahona, fermented in oak vats, and double distilled in a copper still. This is the Premium option of the three Paquera releases.

Another special batch of this was released in 2022. This batch was made by Luis Juárez and his family is San Agustín Amatengo. This particular batch was 1000 liters.

Paquera Mezcal

Paquera Mezcal is meant to be appreciated and savored. The brand recommends sipping Paquera slowly as to experience its quality. Received this as a gift last week and it unfortunately misses the mark. The barril flavor is faintly there but it tastes almost like a tequila with the lack of smoke and the aftertaste. Slight notes of chocolate, bbq, and greenness but it stops abruptly, i assume because it is watered down. I didn’t have high expectations going into this bottle, as I’ve always avoided the Paquera brand, and this fell right around where my expectations were lol I’d recommend spending an extra $20 and getting something worthwhile or spending $10 less and getting a solid espadin if this is the range you’re shopping in.

I’m glad I picked this one up, a new arrival at a nearby store ($70). Unlike the description above, the mezcalero is Isaac Vasquez (sticker over the label). Lot PA00012BAR20. The label says 42.5% ABV, but it seems to have a little more heat than I would expect for that level. My experience is quite different than the previous review, this definitely checks the boxes for things I recognize and enjoy about the Karwinskiis I’ve encountered. A good example of the variation that can occur between producers, batches, etc. I will look for this one again.

Nose- fresh grass, green vegetables, hint of vanilla, and fermenting funk (I’m reminded of the fiber crust above the tepache).
Taste- first wave is true to the nose with fresh green flavors. Some mineral/wet stone components then take over, like a humid basement (in a good way), a long finish with a little citrus and vanilla, among a stronger floral background.
Mouthfeel- moderate texture, slight oil/buttery quality, lingering for a few minutes, sticking to the roof and sides of the mouth.

A low-priced agave Barril mezcal adjusted to 45% ABV; it is less than $70/bottle. I don’t get a ton of the grassy agave Karwinskii notes but I’ve also found Barril mezcals to be very different between brands. I’m not sure if I would guess this was a Karwinskii in a blind taste test. That said, it is enjoyable and has notes of apple peel, lemon zest, and vanilla bean. Lot PAQBJ450118. 3 stars.

Feb 2023 update. Trying batch PBR7001 from Luis Juarez, 46%. Big piney salt notes. Organic potato vodka. A bit of menthol. 3.5 stars.
