Rey Campero Mezcal
Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

Ok not trying to be a hater but I think after this bottle I’m done purchasing Rey Campero bottles. They are ok for the price but I’m never really impressed (besides the Chato) and the burn is always high on their releases. Happy to keep sampling pours in bars but yeah done buying the full bottle.
Got this for $90 which is a good price but it’s a very thin Madrecuishe. Def the acetone and marker nose like people have mentioned and it’s not a bomb of earthy greenness like many madrecuishe can be. Very muted overall. Some lemonade, soil, cedar flavor notes but it comes and goes pretty quick. Definitely nothing too bold about this and tastes almost watered down.
As always , I’ll update my review if the bottle opens up and improves but having a little buyers remorse I may need to drink away LOL

Nose: piney, citrus, some herbal elements, maybe a bit of mulch, typical karwinskii for me
Palate: sugared citrus, lemon, tart mango, herbal, lemongrass, candied ginger, moving into the finish I get white pepper, bell peppers, and a leathery
Overall very good and at the price point I usually see it at I’d say it’s a great introduction to karwinksii. Just solid and balanced

118 reviews2019 batch. This is a pretty typical madrecuishe. It has the classic aromas and taste of woody pine, jalapeño peppers and ancho chiles mixed with citrus and marzipan. This would be a great everyday madrecuishe sipper – accessible, enjoyable and you don’t have to worry about running out of your special bottles.

Bottle: 200ml
ABV: 48.9%
Nose: nail polish remover, cantaloupe, melon, honey
Palate: chocolate, gasoline, sweetness
Finish: acidity, minerality
Thoughts: not that great to me. It really felt like nothing in particular stood out except for flavors I wouldn’t like. The mouth feel was good but flavors pretty muted and not exciting.

Nose – Fresh and sweet, like a bakery – baking spices, buttermilk, cinnamon, vanilla, honey. Fresh notes of newly cut grass, wet earth, damp wood, and barbecue sauce.
Palate – Sweet and tangy – bubble gum and brown sugar, with a sip of a piña colada. Some caramel, and a bite of green pepper for good measure.
Finish – A little hot and dry, tangerines with a touch of rubber band.
Good and enjoyable. An unexpected sweet, earthy taste.

47 reviewsDS011-MC. A little harsh on the palate, nose of agave and rubber. I like the flavor, can’t pick out any other notes. Not the best Rey I’ve had, but the best Madre Cuishe so far.

New to this site, but not to Mezcal tasting, after having spent many, many years visiting Oaxaca and Mexico. The Mezcal industry is going through considerable change!
Anyway, I find this Cuishe agave offering (at least the lote I tasted) a little on the harsh side, maybe letting the alcohol bite evaporate might have helped… Some interesting earthy notes but overall noticed an oily finish… not my favorite.

Soft, floral, sweet notes that I come to associate with a mc. However, there is a bit of a funkier or sour finish that brings the overall quality down on this batch for me. On this small flask I picked up in Oaxaca, it says Vicente Sanchez Parada. Solid sipper, but nothing outstanding on this one.
Revisit: Much better as I finish the bottle. Peanuts, brown sugar, and very balanced. Def improved with some air time.

190 reviewsSampled at San Laurel in DTLA, did not catch the batch # or ABV. Nice minerality on the nose. Sweet and floral flavors. A bit of backend black pepper heat and pop rocks! Creamy mouthfeel and a bit of stone fruit, maybe peach. Really nice. Worth investing in a bottle.

1 reviewThe aroma is pleasant, it is dry but the taste is sweet and it goes down smoothly. I received this bottle as a gift and it’s a fine gift. I would also give this because it doesn’t break the bank. It’s good for ppl that don’t have experience with Mezcal.

5 reviewsLote: DS011-MC. Mezcalero: Romulo Sanchez Parada.
Nose: Light Nectar, Grassy, Model Paint(?), Dry Moss, Red Wine / Grapeskins.
Sip: Smooth Heat, Canteloupe(?), Caramel, Bourbon(?).
Finish: Front edge of tongue, back top of throat.
Notes: I’m a big fan of A. karwinskii in general and this Madre-Cuishe definitely delivers! Complex nose and sip, a bit hot as others note, but overall a really fun expression.

Nose – Vanilla cake with whipped cream.
Palate – Oily feel on the tongue. Roasted caramel. A quick jump in heat in the middle. Extremely dry in the finish, cedar smoke and a lingering black pepper heat (and a slight burn – it’s a bit hot even for 49%). Really tasty, but again. super dry.

78 reviewsI’m in a busy bar so not the best tasting environment. Two ounce por served in a copita. Fragrant from a foot away. Butterscotch and ham upon closer inspection. Taste is full in the mouth. Bold with alcohol heat. Aloe, fresh pressed sugarcane juice, and green grass fill the mouth. Alcohol burn and sweetness linger on the palate.

5 reviewsProduction date Dec. 2017. The aromatics are booze and herbal agave green. Borderline minty but the citrus and sweet aromatics smooth things out. The flavor favors an up front sweetness with cacao, caramel, vegetal, grassy, citrus complexity.

430 reviewsI had this in a tasting and I didn’t get the batch number but it was quite a bit better than the last batch of Rey Campero Madrecuixe I tried which was very astringent and alcoholic. Very tropical. Pound cake, allspice, cinnamon, pineapple, mango, fuji apple. Nice one.
