About this destilado de agave
Sotoleros Lechuguilla (Blue Label) from Tavi Torres is made from 100% agave in Batopilas, Chihuahua. Tavi’s family has been making agave spirits for 4 generations. The name Lechuguilla is a local name for distilled agave in this region. This can be a bit confusing as the same name is used for a specific type of agave in other communities in Mexico.
Tavi’s Lechuguilla is typically be made with Agave shrevei subspecies magna, Agave bovicornuta, or Agave polianthiflora. Tavi collects wild agaves and cooks them in an underground over using oak firewood. He mills the cooked plants with a mallet and then ferments the juice and fibers in stone vats. Next, Tavi distills in a stainless steel pot still with a wooden top. He adjusts the final distillate with spring water from the region. The flavor and profile of Tavi’s Lechuguilla has hints of fresh peppers, vanilla, and fresh herbs. His micro batches range between 60 and 120 liters each.
Sotoleros
Sotoleros is a collection of traditional distillates from northern Mexico, which seeks to represent the tradition, art and culture of the region. Products from this brand began appearing on shelves in early 2021. Sotoleros has a connection with the legendary brand Clande Sotol – the colors on the bottle labels follow a similar pattern too. However, Soloteros is not a “rebrand” and the exact history between the two brands is unknown.

I can’t say a whole lot about this. Very pure tasting, fruity aroma. That’s about it.

542 reviewsNose – Like falling into a sea of brand, new racquetballs. An extremely rubber-forward aroma but somehow still pleasant.
Palate – Solid heat for 49% ABV, I perceive it to be low 50’s level at least. Slightly higher than medium viscosity, great mouth feel. A bit herbal / medicinal. Fresh mint leaf – almost a mojito bomb. Incredibly intense flavors overall and the finish / aftertaste go on for days. I’ll still be tasting this at breakfast but do quite enjoy this sotol.
This was a 1.5 oz. sample from mezcal reviewer and only man to ever to body slam AND beat Andre the Giant in a drinking contest, Rahkal. Lot 5.

Synthetic rubber/plastic factory concentrated into liquid. Doesn’t sound like a selling point, but something about the finish rounds out the flavors and makes it quite enjoyable to me. I’m a fan of the unique, pungent robustness.

738 reviewsLot 5. Aromas of new sneakers, diesel exhaust, and magic markers. The palate has more magic marker and maybe some paint thinner, mixing with new sneakers/new rubber. I typically like new sneaker mezcals, which I’m guessing is why this one was sent to me, but this is way over the top. I’m not enjoying this at all unfortunately.

430 reviewsLot 2. Very piney and herbal. Pine needles, thyme, sage, rose petals, and something that reminds me of strawberry-rhubarb pie filling. Another tasty and interesting expression from Sotoleros. 4 Stars.
Lot 5. Completely different than Lot 2. It tastes the way that new sneakers smell and it also tastes like the smell when you open a can of tennis balls. I’ve tasted these flavors in Mezcal before but never this intense. This batch is not for me. 2 Stars.
