They implement the best fair trade practices where they work, and they have many efforts in agave sustainability. Their mezcals come from the different mezcal-producing states. They also have some special edition, small-batch mezcals. The brand also releases the Pelotón de la Muerte line of mezcals.

In 2021, the brand (under Artisanal Distillates, LLC) raised money via the StartEngine platform at a $32.7 million pre-money valuation.

Ángel makes incredible mezcal in Sola de Vega. The balance between agave and “muddy” clay is perfect. It reminds me of the Cuentacuentos batch I tried a while back. There some toasted coconut, maple syrup, guava, and dried peat. Really nice. I had a small sample but I’m sure a bottle would get even better with a little time and air. I don’t have the batch info but it was the first batch of this Leyendas release.

Phenomenal Coyote!! Dark aromas of BBQ, prunes, and rich chocolate. The palate has light clay and notes of a root beer float, 7Up, chocolate, dates, raisins, and molasses. This is a really solid pour.

Nose: Saddle leather. Cinnamon and spice / apple-type cake.

Palate: Incredible mouth feel – slightly tingling like the bubbles in a can of soda. A hint of chocolate. Finish is super long – sweet, spicy (not peppery but more baking spices) and the right amount of saltiness.

This was a 1 oz sample that went way too quick. This stuff rocks!

My favorite of the 3 new Leyenda expressions that I sampled. Clay distilled but very balanced and light on the clay. Root beer, Bbq brisket, hot chocolate, prunes, brandied cherries, and wet dark clay. It’s a bit expensive at around $130 a bottle but it’s really good.
