Pox
Pox (pronounced “posh”) is an ancestral and ceremonial Mayan spirit. It’s made with four different types of corn, sugar cane, and wheat, which are all traditionally grown in Chiapas. In many communities, Pox is simply referred to as aguardiente. The word “pox” in Tzotzil means “medicine, cane liquor, cure.” Pox is commonly used in religious ceremonies and festivals in San Juan Chamula, Chiapas.
