About this destilado de agave
5 Sentidos Azul from Atelo Ramirez & Laura Arriaga was produced in the region of Los Reyes Mezontla, Puebla. On a trip to Morelos, maestro mezcalero couple Atelo Ramirez and Laura Arriaga took notice of the rolling fields of maguey Azul and decided to inquire about purchasing some for their production. That decision led to a truckload of cultivated Azul making its way back to their palenque in Los Reyes Metzontla, Puebla, where together they processed these agaves in a typical mezcal fashion: underground roast with firewood, manual crush with wooden mallets, ambient fermentation with spring water, and double-distillation in a rustic clay-copper-steel still. The result is a fascinating example of what blue weber agave tastes like in the hands of talented mezcaleros.
“La Colección Mixteca” is a curated selection of small-batch agave spirits crafted in the rustic distilleries of the mountainous Mixteca region of Oaxaca and Puebla. Each bottling explores the maestro mezcalero’s interpretation of subjecting agave endemic to the region to peculiar production methods and styles that have largely fallen out of favor in modern times. A significant portion of sales from the collection will be used for palenque improvement projects.
5 Sentidos
5 Sentidos (or Cinco Sentidos) is named after the five senses that their mezcaleros use to produce their agave spirits. The producers of this mezcal do not use any model machinery or tools, being guided only by their senses throughout the production process. The brand was launched by El Destilado restaurant in centro Oaxaca. The restaurant is known for it’s creative menu, unique cocktails, and exception agave spirits. The brand is a curated tour of Mexico with a wide range of expressions that are made by some of the best mezcaleros in the region. Cinco Sentidos is uncertified mezcal and is labeled as “Destilado de Agave”.

Nose: nice citrus, honeydew, stewed fruits, peach, mango, damn this is fruity and good. Reminds me of apricot cheese from Trader Joe’s. Slightly cheesy a bit of spearmint and basil
Palate & Finish: fruits continue. Stewed mango, funky honeydew, some slate, nice leatheriness and limeade as it moves into the finish. Finish is pickled peppers, a bit of spearmint and basil like the nose.
This is absolutely terrific. If blind I’d probably not guess it’s Azul although it does draw some parallels to the Defino batch from a few years ago. So much wonderful fruit notes with a great mouthfeel. Love it

47 reviewsLot 03-22. #151/328. Aroma is a sweet acetone, funk. Palate is similar with the ripe fruit, acetone profile with a nice funky finish that’s cheese-like. I had this as a 2 oz. pour, always wanted to try it and glad I did!

101 reviewsI’ve had a two oz pour twice now and it really stood out to me both times. The only brand I’ve ever sampled with the Azul in isolation and not part of an ensemble. Really unique in flavor profile, almost like a dark fruit bomb with the presence of the blue Weber underlying and a perfect amount of smoke and minerality. I finished these pours quicker than usual as I kept wanting to come back to it! Wish the bottle itself was at a slightly lower price point, but I loved this stuff!
