About this destilado de agave
Agave Mixtape Papalote Capón from Ciro Barranca was released as part of Mixtape Vol. 9, Side A in December of 2022. This is the last batch that he ever produced before his passing in May of 2022. From Agave Mixtape:
A widower, Don Ciro spent his final years living in his fabrica, sleeping just a few feet from the where the condensors dripped the mezcal his grandsons were distilling. Being so close to the process he’d spent his life honing, Ciro struggled to keep himself on the sidelines. While he stopped doing day-to-day, hands-on work several years ago, whenever he found a burst of energy or inspiration, he’d take a more involved role in a batch, directing every step of the process.
Ciro completed Batch 0522CB just a few weeks before his passing. While the majority of the batch continues to rest, [they] are proud to share a bit of it in Agave Mixtape.

Ciro’s last batch Papalote presents a peculiar profile. I agree that the nose might strike a chord of green apple akin to green jolly rancher with a maraschino cherry, or venture into a subtle floral territory. On the palate, the dominant notes of Honeysuckle and white pepper could be accented by a hint of citrus or even fresh-cut grass, leading to a mildly spicy finish. Despite its distinctiveness, it strays slightly from my favored high ABV expressions, offering a lighter, yet complex taste narrative. RIP Ciro.
