About this mezcal
Mezcal Ánimas Papalometl is produced by mezcalero Luis Angeles Reyes in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca using maguey Papalometl (agave Cupreata). The agaves are harvested after 8 years and cooked in a conical ground oven, milled with a tahona, fermented in wooden vats, and double distilled in copper pot stills. The nose is sweet with an herbal finish. On the palate, this mezcal is fresh, herbal and mentholated. Earlier batches of Ánimas Papalometl were produced by mezcalero Romualdo Martínez.
Ánimas Mezcal
Mezcal Ánimas is an offering from their master mezcalero to summon Mayahuel, the female deity of maguey. In this ritual the spirits of the agave plant give life to the sacred rabbits that, as a liquid spirit, allow us to enter a mystical world.

Picked up this 200 ml bottle at Tahona Baja in Jan, 2023. Toasted graham cracker, dark brown sugar, caramel popcorn, and stale garage (maybe after an oil change). Complex and inviting. Wish I had gotten a full 750, but you know, those border restrictions are a problem when you cross at San Ysidro, only one liter per person (which means a 750 and a 200). Don’t want to risk trying to bring across a couple extra bottles when a border agent is having a bad day.

Nose – Red apple. Vanilla cream.
Palate – A quick blip of cotton candy. Big time butterscotch. Maple. Banana cream. Then lasting vanilla extract. Unlike any curpeata I’ve ever tried and it’s awesome!

3 reviewsNOSE: butter menthol on the nose with a sweet butterscotch finish
TASTE: chocolate peppermint menthol. Starts minty, menthol and with further sips will continue to push towards mint chocolate.
MOUTHFEEL: Lovely smokiness with a big body and a sharp finish that lingers. High alcohol content lingers on the lips.
DRANK AT: Casa Oaxaca, Oaxaca City, Mexico
CONCLUSION: A complex and intriguing mezcal that requires sipping and deliberation. Great with dessert. Had with chocolate dessert and was a great accompaniment.

6 reviewsThis Cupreata is one of the few Cupreatas from Oaxaca and one of the best mezcals I’ve ever had. It’s perfectly balanced with sweetness, smokiness and a peppery finish. I bought a bottle and went through it right away. Definitely a sipper. Enjoy!
