Casa Manglar Espadin y Madrecuishe is a mezcal ensamble produced in San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca, México. The agaves are sourced using a combination of estate grown and wild maguey. The agave plants are cooked underground for 4-7 days, milled using a stone tahona, naturally fermented for 3-20 days depending on the ambient temperature. This mezcal is double distilled in 200-700 liter copper pots. This mezcal has notes of black pepper and bitter chocolate with a mineral finish.

Casa Manglar’s (Mangrove house in Spanish) philosophy is to offer one of the best mezcals, always respecting traditions and being able to share them with everyone. The name is a tribute to the indigenous people living in the area of Sierra de Oaxaca.
All of the mezcals from the brand are produced by two palenques in San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca. They have a production capacity of 12,000 liters per month. Agave is sourced from nearby fields in various stages and also purchased on the open market.

Nose – Vanilla. Light oak. White bread dough. Subtle ethanol and Magic Marker notes.
Palate – Really nice woodiness which is the highlight. Vanilla bean. This is a decent economical ensamble but the weak part is that the sweet component is kind of artificial with a tad bit of ethanol heat in the finish.

A pretty decent blend. The madrecuishe comes through nicely with woodiness and earth, a good dose of smoke and black pepper. Good hit of sweetness as well and crème brulé. There is an off burnt rubber flavor on the backend, but it goes away after the mezcal sits for a while.

Smell has some lactic notes along with some fruit sweetness. Taste is OK here. I do get the notes of the MC agave, which are pleasant – creaminess and some piney notes. The finish is a bit rough and seems hotter than the 45%. Overall though a light and refreshing mezcal (trying the other options under this brand, I believe this ensamble to be not as good as the single varietals…esp the espadin).

The nose brought on this fall bonfire memory. Herb butter and toast. Wood-scented candles – rosemary, sandalwood, pine but as fuel in a fireplace. Saline – seems like a theme with this distillate at this point. Finally this poolish almost sourdough aroma.
The palate is very gin-like in flavor. Pinecones, juniper, conifer trees, pinewood. Toasted, smoking rosemary. Slate and mineral water. Onion and dried garlic powder. Everything bagel seasoning.
A balanced finish that is enjoyable. Herbal dill and spring onions. Woody and dry but pleasantly so. Burnt matches, sulfur, iron, and copper.
This ensemble is thankfully better together than its individual parts. The woody, juniper-like flavors would be great in a Ranch Water. As a sipper, it’s just ok.

Aroma is bright with fruit—apples and overripe pineapple.
Taste is good with light smoke and some sweetness.
Finish is ok but with a slight petrol note in the back of the mouth and throat. Overall good.

A lot of metallic and chemical flavors. Copper pipes, bitter tea, nail polish remover, strawberry jam, shoe polish, vanilla, and sandalwood. After some air it got better in the glass. The harsher chemical flavors went away and the vanilla became more prominent.
