About this destilado de agave

Comunidad No. 3 – Rancho Viejo is a small 197-liter batch of wild maguey Mexicano (Agave rhodacantha), distilled in a small pueblo south of Sola de Vega. Mezcalero Gabino Ramirez is self-taught, and he rents a small still in the village. The mezcal is a single distillation to proof, using a refrescadera mounted atop the still, which increases the rectification of the distillate. This batch was distilled June, 2021.

Comunidad

Comunidad is a brand from Hector Vasquez de Abarca, who ran production at Los Danzantes, and Ansley Coale, importer of mezcals and raicillas since 2004 and creator of the Mezcalero brand. They collaborated on Comunidad to find, bottle, and represent superb agave spirits with the intent of helping to preserve the society and culture from which they come. Society and culture create the depth that underlies these profound human achievements, but they are threatened by rapid commercialization.

Aromas of candy apples, Marciano cherries, strawberries, lime and bright citrus zest. The palate is very very slate heavy, notes of rusty books, old dry dates, tobacco, and new cardboard. The nose on this doesn’t smell like Sola de Vega but the the palate has that classic Sola slate taste. Perhaps that’s due to the refrescadera vs clay pot distillation. Not sure. Either way, this one is really enjoyable.
