About this mezcal
Creador Tepextate + Mexicano is produced by maestro palenquero José Alberto Pablo in San Bernardo Mixtepec, Oaxaca. This small-batch 100% agave expression was cooked in an underground river rock-lined stone oven for 5 days, milled by hand with wood mallets (mazos) in a hollowed tree trunk (canoa), fermented 3-5 days in half-buried 90-liter clay pots, and twice distilled in 60-liter clay pots. The all-clay fermentation and distillation process makes this mezcal unique from most commercially available mezcals.
Batch JAENTM0524 is José Alberto’s first time working with Tepextate. This is 50/50 split between Tepextate and Mexicano. The agaves are cooked, milled, fermented, and distilled together. The wild Tepextate was harvested in San Baltazar Chichicapam, and the Mexicano from Zimatlán.
Creador Agave Spirits
Creador Agave Spirits seeks out independent family producers who have little to no representation outside of their local markets – producers who want to make a transition to full-time production of destilado and need help getting their agave spirits to market.
Creador strives to support palenqueros and their communities by providing autonomy for the producers, as well as fair pricing. The company does not contractually obligate producers, nor negotiate price – what the palenqueros ask, they pay, and the company will advise if they think the spirits are underpriced. Creador profit-shares with the producers, providing transparency into the complex economics of selling spirits into the tiered alcohol-distribution systems prevalent in the US.
Creador translates to “creator” and is an homage to the artisan creators of agave spirits, and a tribute to the creators and makers in us all. De la mano y el corazón – from the hand and the heart.
You can now order Creador directly to your door.

738 reviewsBatch JAENTM0524. The first aroma to hit the nose is jalapeno. After that, there are more subtle aromas of dried coca leaves, tobacco leaf, and dark chocolate. And then there are these herbaceous aromas of celery, cilantro, and a bit of mint. The palate is equally as complex. Again the green pepper / jalapeno flavor is at the forefront but there’s a lot happening beneath that. This includes tasting notes of milk chocolate, espresso beans, spearmint, unsmoked Amsterdam Shag, a little caramel. This has depth and complexity. It’s bold and big and round. I like it.

On the nose I get a great mix of both the green, earthy tep notes and that spicy/peppery mexicano. Definitely get the deep, chocolate notes as well.
On the taste do not get much of the tepeztate notes (which is a shame as that’s my favorite agave). Some minty, clean freshness on the finish. Do not get as much of the clay, leather funkiness like on the other bottles from this brand either. Hard to even know this is clay distilled! Really unique offering compared to the rest of Creador’s lineup.

Lot of Tepextate aromas on the nose, green and the smell of fresh cut pencas or aloe. Some smoke as well.
Flavors up front are more Mexicano driven: dry, earthy, and tart. Back end has some floral, acetone, rubber, and char. Tepeztate gets lost a little but some faint green pepper and wet earth notes. A bit of a miss for me.

Nose: nice and earthy, chocolate powder, cumin, tobacco, coffee grounds, a bit of tried leaves
Palate: continues on the palate, chocolate chest pie, almonds, espresso, I get a little pear and red fruits, some lighter notes as it sits but it remains earthy in an awesome way. Finish is burnt ends. Some herbs like sage and rosemary, a bit of raisin
This is terrific. What a well done profile, earthy yet balanced and slightly fruity. I love this

Review #179: The nose has earth, dark chocolate, clay, roasted nuts, fresh coffee, anise, pine, eucalyptus, jalapeno, strawberry, and raisin.
The palate is very rich, with dark chocolate, nuts, coffee, earth, clay, caramel, plum, raisin, cinnamon, pine, anise, smoked wood, carmelized jalapeno, and cloves.
This is sooo good. It is like easy mode pulling notes out of this because it’s so complex but everything presents itself very well, I’m sure if i sat here another hour id pick plenty more notes from it. There’s something about the way that tepextate just rips through the clay that I adore. It’s this super solid base of those earthy mexicano clay notes along with terpy, green, herbal tepextate notes. The mouthfeel is superb and the flavors stay very rich and full all the way throught the palate and very long finish with the way it coats your mouth. Stellar stuff that I need a bottle of soon.

101 reviewsAnother 4.5/5 pour from Creador. I almost gave this 5 but I feel like it’s missing just a little something. First off, I’ve never had Tepe and Mexicano paired together in an ensamble in isolation before and this is just a fantastic combo! Also, really interesting to have the two agaves cultivated in different regions, you can definitely taste that in the profile and the Chichicapam is lingering in here and I love it– such a distinct flavor from that region.
The nose and flavor profile here is like a big bowl of halloween candy that has the chocolate and fruity candies mixed together. Eating a snickers that kinda tastes like skittles haha but better because it’s mezcal. Fruity, bell pepper, jalapeno and black pepper from the tepeztate with a chocolatey undertone from the Chichi soil that slides right into the chocolatey, perfumey mexicano. I will be buying a bottle of this it’s incredibly unique. The first sip I said “whoa” lol

Aroma – Exciting notes of dark chocolate and campfire
Palette – Chocolate, spice, tropical candy fruit. Vegetal, grassiness from the Tepextate. Overall, creamy mouthfeel with a herbaceous, anise finish. This is a great ensamble from Creador.

Jose alberto pablo. Sampled on 10/2024. Aromas out of the bottle are milk thistle sap, bitter, dark chocolate in coffee espresso. Briney and slate, seasalt and seaweed, with that little bit of fishy overtone. Flavors fall into suit with something that feels like chocolate, creme brulee or taramasu, cinnamon chocolate cream. Very little alcohol or smoke is present, finishes, incredibly clean with Once again, Cocoa cinnamon chocolate. The overall balance and how well everything integrates all the flavors the mouthfeel and the aroma is just amazing from this mezcalero. And brand. After it opens up a bit in the glass, I’m getting tobacco leaf. Wet slate dark unrefined, chocolate. This is quite delicious and slightly different than most mezcals. This is so smooth in mouth coating.I just love the finish on this
