Cuentacuentos Papalote is made by Don Antonio Sonido using 100% Papalote (Agave cupreata) in the community of Pantitlán, Guerrero.
About this destilado de agave
Cuentacuentos Papalote is made by Don Antonio Sonido using 100% Maguey Papalote (Agave cupreata) grown in Plan de la Pila and distilled in the community of Pantitlán. The agaves were cooked underground for 8 days, milled using a 20 horsepower shredder, fermented for 9 days, and then double distilled in copper pots. The final product is adjusted using heads and tails of the distillation run.
Cuentacuentos
Cuentacuentos curates small-batch traditional mezcals and destilados de agave from producers across the state of Oaxaca. Cuentacuentos released its first 6 mezcal expressions in 2018; future releases from the brand will change over time and include non-certified mezcals. The logo and bottle artwork (by artist Cesar Ruiz Conseco) features an opossum or tlacuache in Spanish. The tlacuache on the logo is El Viejito, the little old man opposum who stole mezcal from the demons as a service to humanity. The tlacuache ranks with the jaguar, eagle, and burro in importance in Zapotec, Taina, and Mexican mythologies. The Cuentacuentos motto is Mezcal brings people together, stories make us friends.

47 reviewsVery interesting. A prominent dandelion aroma and other stuff I couldn’t put my finger on. It seemed to change over time. Would try another Lot for sure.

Nose: spice melons, tart apples, cumin, limes, milk chocolate as it sits
Palate: Honeydew, spiced hot chocolate, figs, crazy how it started fruity and has gone more earthy, soil, cherry laffy taffy, definitely agree with the allspice others mention and that continues through to the finish. Finish is nice smoked peppers, baking spices, raisins
Wonderful stuff. I love Cupreata and this one leans into the earthy side which is fun.

Antonio Sonido is One of my all-time favorite Mezcaleros. I’ve had Mezcal from him through the brands Sanzekan, Aguerrido, Mal Bien, and Cuentacuentos. I’ve never had a bottle that wasn’t fantastic. All of his Mezcals have a chocolatey-ness that I absolutely love! This batch is probably the most chocolatey I’ve ever had. It’s decadent! I absolutely love this one! I wish I had 100 L of this batch!! Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and a side of chocolate milk. Fig Newtons, medjool dates, and Allspice (Jonny nailed it). After I bought this and tasted it I tried to get more but it was sold out. If you see this buy it!
