El Buho Especial Tepeztate delivers an intense vegetal and earthen clay explosion of flavor with a long finish of agave, spice, and exotic green fruit.
About this mezcal
El Buho is known for making a quality, affordable mezcal made with agave Espadin, but is now expanding into the wild agave territory with this limited edition agave Tepeztate. Production of El Buho mezcals are overseen by the family matriarch Elsa Jaurez Mendez and her husband, Master Mezcalero Octavio Jiménez Monterroza. The agaves in Lot 2 were sourced in Santa Maria Zoquitlan, Oaxaca and the resulting mezcal was rested in stainless steel tanks for 20 months. According to El Buho, agave Tepeztate requires a 3rd distillation due to its low sugar content.
El Buho Mezcal
El Buho Mezcal was founded by Jose Isaac “Pepe” Jimenez Mendez, who comes from a long line of mezcal producers, and TJ Steele, a Brooklyn-based chef. TJ and Pepe launched their mezcal brand with a mission to deliver a high-quality mezcal at an affordable price in an iconic bottle. El Buho Mezcal is a small batch mezcal that is made in the heart of Oaxaca.

Nose : bell peppers and green leafy vegetables then turns into something more savory and meaty.
Taste : much like the nose with a buttery texture.
Finish : a little smoke and jalapeno.
Incredible price point for a no nonsense straight up tepeztate..

Nose – Green bell pepper. Catching some sweet red bell pepper too. New tennis shoe soles.
Palate – Jalapeno. Lime Jolly Rancher. The vegetal, sweet, spicy and smoky elements are balanced perfect. And a subtle jalapeno spicy heat long into the finish. This stuff rocks!

430 reviews1 oz tasting, no Lot #. Really nice aromatic and green tasting Tepextate! Incense, fabric softener, cucumber, jalapeño, bell pepper, green olive, salted butter, and brown sugar. Tasty!

385 reviewsProduce section at HEB. Cucumbers, cilantro, mint, lime. Really strange for a tep imo, because there is little to no sweetness to balance out the garden I am drinking. Not sure if I love it or dislike it….. maybe missing something? Or is my palate dog crap today? Leaning towards the latter

15 reviewsI’ll wish we had half stars cause I’d add one as this is just that close to perfection. Lot 001/TPX Big beautiful herbal nose with with bell pepper/black pepper and fresh mown grass. crystal clear and smooth with a perfect aftertaste that sits on your palate like butter and just a tiny hint of mineral. You’d never guess that it was 48%
This is a perfect compliment to food..

23 reviewsAll about the green pepper. Nose and initial hit in the palate is Jalapeno forward. Finish is sweet and still peppery. All in a great way.

668 reviewsThis is a really nice tepextate. It’s just shy of 5 stars for me. There are incredible green pepper notes on the nose. The plant is displayed beautifully in this mezcal. The spirit itself is incredibly thin, almost watery yet a bit dry which is interesting considering the mezcal is 48% ABV. I get delicious notes of mint, tobacco, green peppers, and tangerine. El Buho calls this a special release so try it while you can. Lot 1.

734 reviewsLot 001/TPX. Smells awesome! Lots of aromas of fresh green peppers and asparagus. This is sugary and sweet with notes of cooked Agave and freshly ground pepper. The flavor is a bit thin, but delicious. It’s worth having one of these around the house.
