About this destilado de agave

Gusto Historico Cuixe con Espadin de Milpa from Eusebio Santos was produced in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. This is an ensamble of maguey 50% Cuixe (Agave karwinskii) and 50% Espadin (A. angustifolia). The agaves are cooked in an underground oven, milled by tahona, fermented with open air yeasts, and double distilled in a copper alembique still.

Review is for the bottle with Tepextate. Just had a pour of this over a client meeting— opted for only an oz since it was during “work” but wish I did 2 oz. I really enjoy gusto historico’s mezcals and have never had anything from Eusebio before. I really enjoyed this but don’t think I’d buy a bottle. Starts over very green and grassy from the cuixe. Not a ton of Espadin in the flavor profile which I liked but the tepextate is definitely in the finish. Solid!

I was keen to purchase the edition with Tepextate, but Travis Heights Wine & Spirits in Austin was fresh out so I grabbed this. Initially it was very high dry Karwinskii, almost on the acid side. Later is really opened up and ‘smoothed’ out. Classic Miahuatlan minerals, wet stone Karwinskii spice. Not something I’d want a whole bottle of again, but can’t complain. Big fan of this producer, have a bottle of his Tobala and Bicuixe stashed away.
