About this destilado de agave
Gusto Historico Tepextate/ Arroqueno/ Madrecuixe/ Cuixe was made by maestro mezcalero Victor Ramos in the community of Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. This spirit was made with 25% Agave marmorata, 25% Agave americana var. oaxacensis, 25% Agave karwinskii, and 25% Agave kawinskii sp. The agave was single distilled in a copper refrescadera still.
Gusto Histórico
Gusto Histórico specializes in bringing unique destilados de agave y mezcales tradicionales to the market. The brand was started by one of the co-founders of famed Oaxacan mezcaleria Mezcaloteca, and the Gusto Histórico brand features many of the same producers, with a focus on preserving traditional production methods and practices.

Always neat trying a production from a father and then a son, or vice-versa.
Again, a rising aroma like not many mezcales I’ve sipped as of late. A bit more sharpness here on the nose, perhaps the Agave americana. Incredibly layered and flavorful on the palate. I resisted gulping for a moment to enjoy. Lovely fullness again and this is a great example of why these two are so famous for their work.

668 reviewsDry cinnamon sticks. Lots of dry wooden spice. Once it sits open the dryness fades and mineral complexity starts to surface. It’s hard to experience more with a small sample but I think this destilado would evolve nicely. It’s neat that each of the 4 agaves used is 1/4 the recipe. This is my least favorite of the delicious Gusto Historico releases (four as of early 2021).

542 reviewsNose: Sweet lime. Yummy, refined smoke. Touch of leather.
Palate: Alpha dominant flavors! Honey roasted cereal. The smoke is very subtle from start to finish but incredible. A sprinkle of salt in the finish.
Another great Gusto Historico ensamble.

Peanut butter, banana slices, strawberry Laffy Taffy, lemon drops, violets.
Palate is sweet, some earth, some white pepper floral spice. Vibrant acidity, low bitterness. The finish is long, more earth and mineral driven, but sweet with a little vanilla candle. Ramos is fantastic.
