In 2009, Carlos resumed the family tradition and teamed up with 5th generation maestro mezcalero Pedro Hernandez to create Koch El Mezcal de Oaxaca, with the goal of preserving and promoting mezcal culture. After 10 years of business, they’ve now integrated more than 15 communities and 50 producing families into their collective. Each batch will vary, so check your bottle for details.

4 reviewsNose floral, marker pen, orange oils. Woody after opening up, tree sap. Palate saline, funk, mineral, a little charcoal, fairly light/thin mouthfeel. Finish leans savoury, salty, honey roast ham, subtle peanut/nuttiness. First from the Koch lineup for me. Won’t be an everyday pour, but interesting enough!

1 reviewNose: sweet agave, alcohol forward
Mouth: a split second of agave taste that leads very quickly into ash and burnt barbecue.
Finish: not very long and very similar to mouth.
This has to be a different batch because it’s very tough to taste the karwinski in this. A blind taste, would give me an average espadin at best.
However, it would of course be OK for mixing. I was just expecting a lot more from a karwinski-barril.
