About this mezcal
Macurichos Tepeztate is produced using 100% Maguey Tepeztate (Agave marmorata) in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, México. After growing for 18 to 30 years, the harvested agaves are cooked in an earthen oven, milled using a stone tahona mill, fermented in wooden vats, and distilled twice using copper pot stills. This mezcal has sweet vegetal notes of bell pepper, corn, cilantro, and Thai basil.
Macurichos Mezcal
Led by maestro mezcalero Gonzalo Martinez, Mezcal Macurichos is dedicated to the protection of the cultural tradition and the agricultural heritage of agave within the iconic mezcal production community of Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. The family employs numerous neighbors and is one of the rare distillers the area who still produce using Ancestral methods, including clay pot stills. Gonzalo and his brothers cultivate their own diverse fields of agave – planting from seed and reforesting the diminishing wild agave populations.

A classic Tep, with typical notes and an emphasis on herbal flavors, with vegetal and green notes. There is pronounced earthiness to this expression, and some citrus notes as well. The alcohol was well balanced, with mild smokiness, and a pleasant finish.

542 reviewsNose – Rock candy. Subtle sharp cheddar cheese. Light mint. Not very much vegetal aroma I find for a typical tepeztate.
Palate – Pime wood. Tiny bit of anise. Rose petal. A woody and slightly bitter finish – very long, minutes into the aftertaste. Solid mezcal. This was a 2 oz. sample.

668 reviewsWet cement aroma. Hot Tómales candy. Wet stone. A bit hot despite the sub 50% ABV. Second or third time trying this one.. I think I prefer the puntas. Sipped at Bar Lula in NYC. Lote MS-001T. 48.65%

8 reviewsThis bottle was 48.65% abv coming in with the green, herbaceous bright vegetal notes. Perhaps the abv, but this had a stronger and more pronounced burn with less flavor concentration than other Tepeztate I’ve tried. This was served in a shot glass vs. a wide copita so perhaps that contributed to the burn.

Still have a small amount left in the bottle. I have tasted this side by side with other Teps, and it holds up quite well. Classic Tepeztate aromas on the nose: green, vegetal, and earthy. On the palate: minerality, lemon peel, lingering heat, and herbs. It is not sweet, more savory and slightly astringent. Really nice.

Green, herbal, bright. Taste lingers nicely at the end with slight licorice and more herbaceousness. Not bad but def not my favorite tepeztate. 2oz sample
