Maguey Melate Bacanora from Guadalupe Horacio López Quinteros was originally released as the September 2024 Mezcalero of the Month Club agave spirit. This is produced using maguey Yaquiana (Agave angustifolia) in Madera, Chihuahua.
Maguey Melate
Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.
They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. Overall a bit light. Leather, overripe vegetables. Sweet and light buttery notes. Spearmint. All around not bad and probably one of my favorite bacanoras (I can’t seem to find one I love). Cooking spices and light grass in there as well. Haha, it might be a bit “swampy” though as pointed out below 🙂

The taste at entry is all funk, then opens to some leather and overripe vegetables.
The finish is confusing my brain–it’s all over the place with lots of different flavors chiming in. Still very complex.
I have tasted this one a couple times and still cannot decide if I like it. It is good, unique and funky…but maybe not my thing. I guess when the description included “swamp water” as part of the water source it set the tone for my brain. Still fun!

Palette is earthy, mineral, pepper, papery, clove and ginger. Lacks sweetness. Softer finish than other Bacanora’s I’ve had.

130 reviewsNose: Stewed fruits, boiled plantains, a bit of mango, it’s got a little funk going and my brain keeps thinking “swampy” because the label says swamp water is a water source. As it sits I get some nice baking spices, cinnamon, clove, orange this is almost Sangria like.
Palate: Fruits jump to the front before the baking spice party. Mango and pineapple but the flavor isnt sharp and more muted. Then the baking spices come in, cinnamon, clove, ginger, lots of ginger. Moving into the finish I get plenty of minerality, slate and jalapeno to lead out. Maybe even a bit of spicy ginger.
The more I drink this the more I enjoy it. It’s solid and as a first experience with Bacanora brings a little more to the table than I expected. I can see some people really loving this. I dont love the finish but wonder if more time spent with it that might change. I’ll update here if so.
