Maguey Melate Pechuga (Don Goyo Memorial Batch) was produced by Rodrigo Martinez Méndez and was originally released as the November 2024 Mezcalero of the Month Club agave spirit.
Don Goyo was a legendary producer who passed away in November of 2023. He was a legend for both his personality and his mezcal. He was always a gracious host to visitors at his palenque, and his pechuga mezcals were the favorites of many. Traditionally, pechuga mezcals are used for celebrations and also to honor the dead, especially during Dia de los Muertos.
In honor of Don Goyo, his son Rodrigo made this special batch with his mother, using Don Goyo’s famous recipe. The only intentional difference was that they added extra bananas and mangoes, as those were Don Goyo’s favorite fruits.
Maguey Melate
Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.
They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. Aroma is a fruit bomb. Bright mango flesh, orange juice, fruit smoothie.
Palette is warm spice, mango and orange. There is a familiar layering note of turkey, but it takes a back seat to all the fruity flavors upfront. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, and the finish is spice, anise, medium alcohol burn.
This is a fun, fruity mezcal! I would share this with someone skeptical of mezcal.
