About this sotol
Maguey Melate Sotol from Salvador Isidro Derma Piñon was originally released as the August 2024 Mezcalero of the Month Club agave spirit. This batch of sotol comes from the mountain region near Chorreras, which hosts rivers and a giant lagoon in the middle of the desert.
Maguey Melate
Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.
They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!
Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

736 reviewsBatch SAL-SOT-001. Aromas of dried bay leaves, spearmint, menthol, dry grass clippings, and dill. The palate is also full of mint, mixing with vanilla, sarsaparilla, and a dash of dash cocoa powder. The finish is a bit short but this is a really nice Sotol. The sweetness and dry, arid earthiness of this creates a great balance.

430 reviewsThis Sotol tastes exactly like root beer to me. Like exactly! I’ve never had a spirit taste this much like root beer. I’m not a big root beer fan but I’m really digging this one. It’s also got a lot of earth and incense flavors in it. It’s like drinking a root beer with a hippy in the middle of a dust storm at Burning Man. Hell yeah.

on the nose, it is reminiscent of some candied gummys of jabali. sweet roasted candied caramelized green plant (LOL).
bright yet dry. total spearmint sweetgrass. finish reminds me from tasting high grade baking chocolates, raw cocoa notes of the bright citrus floral range. this is cool.

237 reviewsNotes of pine, licorice, super clean.
Taste has some more spearmint, baking spice, burnt orange. Not your normal sotol that’s for sure! The ABV on this one says 44%, which it def. tastes a bit hotter than that for sure. As TallChad said – candied orange in the desert is pretty spot on! Never would have guessed this was a sotol – very good! 4.25

47 reviewsAroma – Sweet dried fruit slices, citrus, pine, mineral/saline like a Pechuga mezcal.
Palate – Pepper, wet dirt, mineral water, black licorice, with a peppermint finish. The alcohol is a little hot on this one. Overall, aroma is ten times better than the palate but a solid Sotol!

126 reviewsBest Sotol I have ever had! Really great! Like finding a candied orange while wandering in the desert.
The aroma is really good with earthiness and orange salt-water taffy.
The taste is great with some minerals, pepper and some citrusy sweetness that I wasn’t expecting but love.
The aroma is good, deep and complex.
This is bright, earthy, sweet goodness from Chihuahua!
Edit: after finishing my review, I read Ben P‘s review. He’s right on about the mint.

149 reviewsNose: Fresh spearmint, dried leaves, dried citrus fruit, lavender, it smells so clean and refreshing
Palate: Subtle stone fruits, fig jam, dried apricot, charred jerky, then it really goes savory, chili pepper, cumin powder, cocoa, then the mint comes back in as it moves to the finish along with this woodsy dried firewood thing. Finish is charred peppers, mole, a bit of chili spice and spearmint.
My fear with the nose was that the mint would over take all the other notes but thats not the case at all. It just taste woodsy rustic with some great herbs and savory elements. This is excellent and the best Sotol I have had by far.
