Mala Idea Mezcal
Mala Idea, which translates to “Bad Idea” is named in celebration of everyone who follows their passions regardless of the risks and challenges they present. From semi-cultivated/wild Espadin to the truly wild agaves such as Tobala, Cuishe, and Tepextate, Mala Idea Mezcal is handcrafted to ensure the absolute best quality. All their agave is cooked in a stone horno, fermented in open-air, crushed by tahona, and distilled in copper stills.

26 reviewsBatch #1 – Very little aroma. The initial flavor is really nice. There’s some subtle caramel, sweet spice, and mild floral notes on the palate. Though the flavors are lovely, they are a bit muted and seem to disappear quickly. I was initially disappointed when I purchased this bottle because the flavors were distant and lacking in character, yet the alcohol was very present. A week later, the flavor to heat ratio is much better and it’s more enjoyable overall, though the finish still seems lacking and alcohol forward. Still, it’s certainly a good bottle for the price point.

23 reviewsA very tasty ensemble. Smells hot on the nose, but is very balanced on the palate. The characteristic Mala idea sweetness is present, but with some citrus and butterscotch flavors.

238 reviewsThis was my favorite of the Mala Idea’s I’ve tried. You can definitely taste the jabali in this one despite only being 11% jabali. Very drinkable.

736 reviewsLot 001. Clean on the nose. I don’t get a ton of aroma, but the palate is bright and flavorful. It has notes of butterscotch and candied yams. There is a lot of Jabali flavor and character on this, especially considering the Jabali is such a low percentage of it. The Jabali really shines through. This is my favorite of the Mala Idea releases.

668 reviewsThis is a very unique and delicious ensamble. I was surprised by how much of the agave Jabali flavor is present for being a relatively small part of the three agave mixture. It is very approachable with flavors of butterscotch, custard, and charred oranges. I’ve never seen this combination of agaves in an ensamble mezcal before. The mezcalero did a great job with the balance of flavors here. Try this one.
