About this mezcal

Mayalen Guerrero is made with 100% wild agave Cupreata. This mezcal is distilled to proof at 54% ABV, meaning that it is bottled at full strength directly off the copper alembic still without adjustment to bring down the alcohol content. This mezcal has a strong herbal kick to it, before pepper and citrus fruit aromas. Cacao, leather, and herbal spice tasting notes continue to the finish.

Mayalen Mezcal

Mezcal Mayalen proudly presents Agua de Juventud, or Water of Youth, mezcal from the mountains of Guerrero. Their products are 100% hand-crafted and organic . Like many, they believe that the climate, water, and soil conditions of the agave have a direct effect on the resulting mezcal. For this reason, their palenque is located on a site that has yearlong access to natural spring water. They have 4 different varieties of mezcal, but all are produced with the same Wild Cupreata Agave. There are slight differences in production that create different flavor notes and alcohol content for each product. Also, each lot of Mezcal Mayalen is somewhat unique. Batch MGR00119
Fruit bomb up front on the nose.

Palate is super smooth and harmonious. No burn, nothing out of place, just the right viscosity.

Taste is delicious and mouth watering – but still bright and filled with soft round fruit. – Maybe mango, starfruit.

The intensity and balance of the flavors is what’s compelling. The frustrating thing about this is the price. I’ve seen it online for $35 from stores who do not have it. By the time it gets to me in Maryland it’s $65. If this was under $50 it would be my everyday sipper. It’s just damn delicious juice.

Batch: MGR00119

Bright fruity punch upfront. High proof makes the flavors bounce. More citrus/fruit flavors here than the typical baking spice flavor I usually get in cupreata. I’m a little disappointed in the lack of information on the label (maestro isn’t listed), but the taste is fantastic.

Batch: MGR00119
Nose: A booming minty sweet heat.

Palate: Junior mints. Funky cream cheese. Limestone. The heat and intensity builds all the way through to a great, scorching finish. It’s not until a minute after when things cool off when I pick up salted caramel (that some other reviewers noted). Love the 54% ABV – full of flavor!

Fruity and floral with some caramel or butterscotch on the finish. I really enjoy this one. This is the only Mayalen I’ve been able to get my hands on but the 54% alcohol isn’t noticeably hot to me. This is definitely one of the best cupreata’s I’ve had for the price. I would definitely recommend trying it.

this is a beast!initial taste of butterscotch and wild berries.alcohol dominates mid way and finish is volcanic!i like strong mezcals but this one is a bit boozy.it is good and has interesting notes but brace yourself.the wild cupreata and borrego are both excellent and would be my choice over this version.the mayalens are good quality but this one is my least favorite.a little goes a long way.UPDATE(3-1-19).this botlle has settled for a few months and the taste profile is better and smooth.similar in profile but a bit more mellow.this is one that would not be the best to start the night with because it is so strong.time has given it a little more complexity and taken some of the rough edge out and i find that i enjoy it more.i do enjoy cupreatas and this one is evolving.3 and a half stars. UPDATE 3-22-21. thjs botlle just keeps getting better! harshness has left the building.deep sweetness of dark berries and a finish that reminds me of brachs butterscotch discs.still has a punch but has evolved into a top shelf mezcal. i am partial to quality cupreatas.
