Mezcalosfera Tobala is produced by Don Ageo Cortes, who is the son of famed maestro mezcalero Felipe Cortes.
About this destilado de agave
Mezcalosfera Tobala from Don Ageo Cortes is made with Agave potatorum that are cooked in an underground oven for 8-10 days. The agave are milled after the cook by ox drawn tahona. The milled agave are fermented in open air tinas for 3-8 days and then double distilled in a copper refrescadera still.
Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca
Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City.

28 reviewsDisappointing, does have the green freshness I expect in a tobala. But it is a minty earthy kind, not pleasant. Not my jam.

Touch of initial sweetness, but it turned harsh on me. The second sip was better, but overall I was disappointed as it didn’t compare well to other tobalás I’ve had (e.g. the Rey Campero by Rómulo Sánchez Parada) and I have liked other offerings by Ageo Cortes.

Lot: 06USA-19
nose: funky rotting fruits, sharpies, guava, dusty basement, bit of cotton candy, grape jolly rancher (i like them i know a lot don’t), pecan wood, sharp bell pepper, juicy fruit gum
palate: nutty, dryer sheets, quite big, juicy fruit gum, baking apples, finish hangs in cajeta chocolate tobacco realm and takes its time
I’m reviewing this bottle at about a quarter remaining, and I feel it changed quite a bit as I progressed through it. definitely preferred it in its first half to its current state. more funky fruits, more bombastic generally, and I recall no impression of dryer sheets or sharpies. also tasted in the wake of that mal bien ageo verde which is just… that’s a tough act to follow man. a bit of that drying finish here. this one’s quite unique and idk if my review does it justice really. 6/10 for me right now though I do recall thinking it pretty great earlier on.

238 reviewsLote: 06USA-19. This is really flavorful and is similar to a tobala I’ve had from his father at Mezcaloteca. It’s jammy, with flavors of grape spree candy and fig Newtons. It’s really unique and worth trying.
