NETA Penca Larga, Madrecuixe, Mexicano Verde from Primitivo Vasquez is a unique ensamble which includes both Agave and Furcraea.
About this mezcal
NETA Penca Larga, Madrecuixe, Mexicano Verde from Primitivo Vasquez is a unique ensamble which includes both Agave and Furcraea, a genus of succulent plants belonging to the family Asparagaceae. Primitivo produced this April 2021 batch with equal parts Madrecuixe (A. karwinskii var.) and Mexicano Verde (A. rhodacantha var.), which helped control some of the saponins from the Penca Larga. This allowed for a more manageable fermentation and distillation. Elvia, Primitivo’s wife, helped out with the distilling. Adjusting a mix of hearts, hearts, and tails, Primitivo crafted a total of 60 liters of this ensamble. 72 bottles went exclusively to Astor Wines and Spirits in New York City.
NETA
NETA is a colloquial word in Mexico that translates to “the real deal” or “the truth”. Since 2012, the brand has worked closely with several small, family producers and a cooperative of twelve palenqueros from the southern valleys and hills of Miahuatlán, Oaxaca. The region has preserved its reputation for producing some of the finest mezcales and agave spirits anywhere in Mexico. The team behind NETA presents a carefully curated selection of extraordinary spirits that would otherwise never be found outside of its place of origin.
A note about NETA labels: The total bottle count written on the front label might be less than the total batch size. Batches may be split between Mexico, Europe, and the US; the handwritten bottle count represents the number of bottles imported into a particular country.

This is well outside the usual flavor sets and really not everyone. I’d recommend for anyone interested in woody/piney/resiney/floral/medicinal flavors, but if that’s not your jam you will not like this bottle as this bottle goes boldly in that direction without much balance elsewhere. The closest bottle I’ve had to it is the La Venenosa Mai.
On the nose is daikon, cooked sunchoke, coconut, and pine resin. The palette reminds me of a more nuanced and delicious version of the pine eau-de-vie’s you see in Austria (and PNW). The initial flavor is douglas fir sap, with goldenrod tea, lilacs, cherimoya sweeetness, maybe coconut water following. The woody finish (from the saponins of the penca larga?) and lilac notes linger on the palette for a long time. Unique, delicious, but definitely could understand someone hating this.

542 reviewsNose – Chopped summer squash. Zucchini bread. Coconut water.
Palate – Pine wood sap. Coconut meat. Orchid petals. Quite an astringent finish. Solid mezcal but heavy handed by way of being incredibly floral with a potent woodiness.

nose: coconut, vanilla, carrot cake, snowpeas, tinged with passionfruit, touch of rye bread
palate: lime cordial, chocolaty, toasted coconut, walnut,
this is bomb. 8+/10. only real issue here is the finish. too woody for me.
