About this mezcal

Mezcal Papá Rey is made by 4th generation mezcalero Don Aquileo Lorenzo in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. This joven mezcal is produced using hand-selected mature 8-12 year old agave Espadin. The agaves are cooked in an underground oven for 5 days and then crushed using a tahona pulled by the family horse. Next, the mash is fermented with water in wooden vats for 7-9 days depending on the climate. Finally, it is double-distilled in small copper pots. This mezcal is clean and citrus forward on the nose. On the palate it is grassy with notes of bell pepper and minerality.

Don Raymundo Duarte y Compania

Don Raymundo Duarte y Compania was created in 2015 by two brothers from Mexico that had a dream to share their traditions with other cultures through their products: Mezcal Papa Rey and Mezcal Don Rey.

Loved this one! Smooth espadín with citric notes. Very aromatic and with strong finish. Worthy mezcal

Expecting the usual earthiness most Espadin’s embody, I was pleasantly surprised by the profound vegetal notes in Papa Rey. There is a nice balance of minerality that is followed by a floral and grassy finish. This mezcal does not fall off short, leaving a pleasant, lingering creamy mouth feel. The smoke is not so heavy that one must mix in an ounce of tequila to round out cocktails. I suggest using 2 ounces of Papa Rey to showcase the natural balance of smoke and spice in cocktails. This mezcal is worth every penny.

Avoid!!! I vomited after I drank it. It wasn’t poisonous, it just tasted that awful. Possibly the worst liquid on Earth.
