About this mezcal
Pierde Almas Espadin is made from agave Espadin that takes 8 to 10 years to mature. This Mezcal is made by maestro mezcalero Gregorio Velasco Luis is San Luis del Rio. Its flavor notes include a bit of smoke, pepper, and hints of chocolate with a long savory finish that holds strong in the mouth.
Pierde Almas Mezcal
Behind each bottle of Pierde Almas is a time-honored recipe kept alive with painstaking care by the family patriarch in each successive generation. Their labels are hand-printed on 100% acid-free, handmade paper derived from fibers that are indigenous to the region and have been in use since pre-Columbian times. With their Wild Agave Reforestation Program, they are actively engaged in the re-forestation of wild species of Agave in those areas where their populations have been depleted. Pierde Almas begins each rainy season by inviting bartenders, chefs, restauranteurs, and journalists to join them for their annual wild Tobalá planting. Due to the artisinal nature of their mezcal, the ABV of each lot may vary slightly.
In May 2018, British multinational alcoholic beverages company Diageo purchased Pierde Almas Mezcal.

Nose – Vanilla soft serve. Wild grass. Tangerine.
Palate – Honeycomb. Fortifying black pepper heat and charred firewood smoke in the middle onwards. Menthol and sea salt in the finish. Spotted a magic marker note in the finish too but only for the first couple sips then it seemed to blend in. I like this bottle: it’s a strong, quality, in-your-face espadin. I envision this to be an ideal, winter-time campfire sipper.

1 reviewAnise seed, vanilla and maple upfront, caramel and grasshoppers (chapulines) in the middle, some cacao bean thrown in for good measure, black pepper and long lasting firewood with an acetic bite to finish. Surprisingly round and cozy, it always makes me think of a good massage. My batch (12-E) was 50.4%, I enjoyed it thoroughly and with a bit of sadness: I probably won’t be buying anymore since they’ve gone Diageo.

144 reviewsI like this a lot, but the heavy handed lack of balance in the finish is a little unbalanced. That said, I’m a big fan otherwise and really have enjoyed working through this bottle.

21 reviewsSweet up front taste. Slight bitterness in the smoke. Good, balanced and lasting burn that is very pleasant. Very smooth for a 49%. Enjoyable. Good.

668 reviewsLot 05-SLR – Lots of green vegetal notes on the nose. Quite smooth for 50% ABV. Not incredibly complex but also no flaws. Vanilla and smoke forward with some flavors of burnt caramel. Finish is on the dry side with a touch of firewood. I like this one but it is quite down the middle – still, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Lot 20-SJR – Smoke with some sour cherry rubber. 49% ABV with personality but no sass. Dry tart finish. Definitely prefer the SLR batch. They also have yet another batch from San Baltazar. This brand has zero transparency so buy at your own risk!
