Rey Campero Jabali + Tepextate is a limited release from Rey Campero and mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada in Candelaria Yegole, Oaxaca.
About this mezcal
Rey Campero Jabali + Tepextate is an Ensamble of wild maguey Jabali and wild maguey Tepextate. This is an interesting mix of agave for maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada as he is perhaps most well known for his single varietal expressions of these two agave. He was one of the first to have regular success with maguey Jabali and his Tepextate mezcals have been lauded at several international spirits competitions.
Rey Campero Mezcal
Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

10 reviewsLot DS001-TS from October 2016. Really odd combination of varietals. I had high hopes given how much I enjoy Romulo’s straight Jabali. I definitely pick up Jabali on the nose. Peppery, leathery and meaty on the palate. A nice touch of funk, too. Pretty dry finish and lingering hints of cacao. Overall good, certainly unique, but for the money, I’d stick with the straight Jabali.

668 reviewsAwesome ensamble from Romulo at Rey Campero. Two very interesting agaves together in a 50/50 marriage of unique flavors. It opens up as agave Jabali with melon notes and finishes with the green peppers of agave Tepextate. The 100% agave Jabali from Rey Campero is explosive whereas the flavors here are quite graceful. It’s a different experience with these two agaves and really enjoyable. October 2016 batch of 280 bottles total.

238 reviewsA combination of two of my favorite varietals. Nothing else like this out, that I know of. Taste Peppery on the front with citrus-sour on the back.
