Rey Campero’s Mexicano is produced from maguey Mexicano that is harvested from high-altitude fields that often contain coniferous and hardwood trees.
About this mezcal
Rey Campero’s Mexicano is produced from maguey Mexicano. This mezcal tastes of smoked wood, dry grass, and cafe espresso. Romulo Sanchez Parada continues to hone his craft, and he seems to improve with every batch. This is traditionally produced and distilled in copper.
Rey Campero Mezcal
Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

736 reviewsLot DS008-M from March 2018. Love this! A new favorite Mexicano in my book. Notes of chocolate, leather, rawhides, mesquite, and camphor. Strong, long finish. I’m really digging this batch. 4.5 stars
Lot DS001-M from May 2013. Very fruity on the nose with almost no pepper. I normally expect some pepper with agave Mexicano, and this has almost none on the nose. The flavor, however, has strong notes of green pepper and caramel. This mezcal is very full in the mouth and a bit oily. I’m a huge fan of Mexicano and this one is good, but not great. This is a solid Mexicano, but it lacks the wow! factor that I’ve tasted in other Mexicano mezcals. It’s a 3.5 stars.

668 reviewsPeppery flavors are dominant in this strong Mexicano mezcal at 48.6% ABV. There are nice earthy tones with hints of firewood, peat, tangerine, and vanilla. Very enjoyable but definitely on the stronger side of Mexicanos. May 2013 Lot D5001-M.
Sipping this same bottle again in 2022, I stand by my rating.. but for different reasons. It’s just fine. It is a bit hot but overall it lacks complexity. The bottle has sat half full since 2017 and hasn’t changed for the better. I still get some of that peat and vanilla. 6 years later there are other Mexicanos I gravitate towards; this one just doesn’t seem unique.
