About this mezcal
Rey Campero Tepextate is made from wild Tepextate that has matured 15-18 years before harvest. After roasting and crushing, it is fermented with wild yeast in the open air before double distillation and bottling. Rey Campero has a strong commitment to local sustainability. For each maguey harvested for their Mezcal, others are planted. They do this with all of their agave, but it is particularly important for the Tepextate populations given the time needed for each Tepextate plant to reach maturity.
Rey Campero Mezcal
Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

22 reviewsA solid four stars. Somewhere between 4 and 4.5. Really interesting but felt it was missing some complexity.

53 reviewsGreen nose – floral, herbs with some sweetness
Mild sweetness continues on the palate but dominated by vegetal flavours, jalapeno, underlying mineral, light smoke.
Spice continues throughout with lingering but light peppery finish.
Thick and smooth. Good balance to it.
Really enjoyable.

144 reviewsSweet with lots of cream cheese frosting, some vanilla, confectioners sugar. Pepper, ashy and acrid. Faint plastic. Lightly vegetal, almost a faint woody note.

235 reviewsClassic tempeztate (probably why I like it so much). Green nose with jalapeño throughout. Peppers and “greens” hitting you directly in the nose & with first sip. Great body and sweet finish. Not as good as the El Jolgorio tepeztate, but this is my favorite of the R.C. mezcals (came in first in a blind taste test of 5x R.C.s). Lote: DS0074-T

18 reviewsLot Unknown … Floral aromas backed by a hint of mild fruit; flavors of green bell pepper with an undertone of minerality. Enjoyable peppery finish. Enjoyed in a “wild & rare” flight, selection 4 of 4.

25 reviewsA coveted 250ml from Oaxaca. Lote: D5007A-T. Mezcalero: Romulo Sanchez Parada. 48.7%. Some alcohol vapours on the nose, then flavour, flavour, flavour. Spice, candy, pepper. If you have only one tepextate on your shelf let it be Rey Compero.

385 reviewsEcho most everything the other reviews have already said. If there were less of a fusel-type alcohol burn on the finish, this would be 5 stars. Well done

28 reviewsContinuing the trend of Rey Campero’s I’ve tried this has a lot of nice notes but overall is too unrefined to be amazing. This Tepextate is spicy and herbacious on the nose, very dry. Palate belies the nose with a bit of agave sweetness backing up a medley of vegetables including celery, cucumber, parsley, bell pepper. Finish is medium length, mostly peppery veg. 83/100

430 reviewsLot DS005-T. It’s been a couple of years since I last had this Mezcal. I revisited it last night and I loved it. Not super complex, just textbook Tepextate. All the flavors that I love most from this agave. Bright and fresh and clean, with fresh jalapeño, lemon curd, and plumeria flower. Puts a smile on my face.

5 reviewsAnother stand out exceptional mezcal! I recall delicious smoke on this. Also dynamic flavors and thicker mouthfeel than the Jabali. Slight building acidity in the middle that softens by sweet finish. It was a close favorite of mine with Jabali. More curiosity going on here with some balanced smoke and depth of flavors. Exceptional wild agave. Romulo and Vicente are dialed in!

40 reviewsNov 2017 D5006A-T 14 / 790. I continue to be a big fan of the whole Rey Campero line. This is right up there with their Jabali. Some ash and minerals and nice rounded sweetness. Went out for dinner and bought the only remaining bottle in the store to bring back to Texas, which is Jan 2016 DS005-T 102 / 582.

734 reviewsGiving this 4 stars overall. I’ve had several batches of this and it seems to level out around 4 stars, with some batches being better than others. The December 2015 batch DS004-T is absolutely incredible. It’s maybe one of the best tepextate’s I’ve ever tasted and I’d give that 5 stars. Lot D3003-T, however, from Sept. 2015 is more like three stars. It’s nicely balanced with a good amount of sweetness and spice. The spirit is fairly thick and viscous with notes of caramelized fruit and freshly ground peppercorn. Good Tepeztate mezcals are hard to find, and this one is pretty darn good.

668 reviewsThis delicious tepextate from Rey Campero is very vegetal on the nose with minimal spice that doesn’t take hold until you sip. The flavors are earthy, cinnamon, and jalapeno with undertones of caramel. This batch is 49% ABV so expect a bite if your palate isn’t warmed up. This review is for the following batch: September 2015 LOT D5003-T
