Tosba Tobala has a sweet and fruity nose. The Tobala is a much smaller agave than the Espadin and it can be harder to cultivate.
About this mezcal
Tosba Tobala has a sweet and fruity nose. Tobala in this region is seasonal and limited. It is in the Tosba mission to protect nature by not over harvesting the Tobala and they have nurseries in place to reproduce and cultivate their own agave. The Tobala is a much smaller agave than the Espadin and it provides extremely diverse flavors in different regions.
Tosba Mezcal
Mezcal Tosba is a microbusiness founded by two cousins from San Cristóbal Lachirioag, Oaxaca, Mexico. While living in Silicon Valley, California in 1999, they were inspired and influenced by the entrepreneurialism that surrounded them. Concerned by the increasing migration from their home region of Cajonos-Villa Alta in the Sierra Juárez mountains, they decided to form a business that would rescue the disappearing mezcal production and bring economic opportunity to the area. Mezcal Tosba is created by using traditional, and what is now called sustainable, agricultural methods of harvesting and distillation passed down by generations of farmers and mezcaleros from the region of Cajonos-Villa Alta of the Sierra Juárez in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

385 reviewsOverpowering pine sol in this that detracts from the solid tobala-ishness. Classic mint, bubblegum, some rock candy…. But for some damn reason I cant shake the pine sol. Maybe I got a bad dram? Will revisit

542 reviewsNose – Icing sugar. A slight, house white wine note. Raw artichoke.
Palate – Sugary sweet at first then a big floral blast – taken back a bit by the abruptness. After a few sips it smoothes out. Campfire, bbq’d pineapple. Hat tip to Zeepuzzler who noted red licorice, getting a solid Twizzlers flavor…spot on. Love the smoke on the back nine and the sweet, white wine influence as well (sorry, not a wine guy… can’t drill deeper than that). Pretty good Tobala!

Cloying butterscotch overwhelms the fruity, vegetal aromas I’ve come to expect from tobala. If I search hard, though, I do find some green apple and grape soda hiding in there. Maybe some red licorice, too.
The nose translates directly onto the palate with the addition of vanilla and distant celery leaf and raw artichoke notes. It could just be this particular lot, but there’s a distracting soapiness that drags the rating down for me.

86 reviewsI love the Tosba story and their Espadin is out of this world for the price so my expectations were sky high. Although I wasn’t blown away this has all the trappings that we love with Tobala: rich, vegetal, light smoke, fruity, and medicinal. I usually don’t get much heat from alcohol on Tobala as they are so soft but I felt the 49% abv right away and I enjoyed that sweet menthol heat. Rock solid all around option.

736 reviewsLot 22. Bottle 5/177. 47.97% ABV. Fruity big green apple aromas. Tastes of green apple, cinnamon, apple sauce, green grapes, unripe watermelon, salt, and vanilla finish. Medium body with a bit of heat.

668 reviewsSoft vegetal on the nose. Vicious mouthfeel which is quite consistent across the Tosba lineup. The vegetal and floral tobala notes aren’t strong, they remain subtle among notes of grape, salt, ash, and apple. Smooth finish with lingering smoke.
2019 Update. Tried lot 22 and really enjoy it. Lots of fruit, guava, and roasted pineapple. Delicious.
