Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal is made by adding Miel de Maguey to the Del Maguey Mezcal San Luis del Rio.
About this mezcal
The Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal has a nose of roasted maguey, with vanilla and pear, creamy almond, apple, coffee, pineapple pallate; and a long sweet smoky orange finish. As the five day maguey roast is uncovered, the Miel of a few of the sweetest magueys is pressed out. Ten percent Miel de Maguey is added to ninety percent San Luis del Rio resulting in an 80 proof Crema de Mezcal.
Del Maguey Mezcal
Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay), Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and Mezcal visionary, Ron Cooper. Ron introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal Mezcal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. They are the first producer to credit each product after the village where our liquid is made. When you see their beautiful green bottles you know it’s Del Maguey. Most of Del Maguey’s mezcals are distilled to proof, so the ABV will vary slightly between batches.
In June of 2017, international spirits company, Pernod Ricard, purchased majority stake in the company. Del Maguey is now part of their portfolio that includes Jameson Whiskey, Absolute Vodka, and Havana Club Rum.

153 reviewsThis is a liqueur, so my four stars hail from a different galaxy than those for rating mezcals and a crema serves a different purpose than a mezcal. Just as a Frenchman would never try and convince his guests that a pineau de Charentes is a cognac, a Mexican would probably not try and convince you this should be compared with mezcals. Serve a bit chilled with strong blue cheese and rye/caraway biscuits. Or with a dessert that has some acidity.
Vanilla, subdued cinnamon, baked apple and agave sweetness. Smoke in the background, a bit like drinking a Drambuie.

26 reviewsDisclaimer: yes, I know this is a liqueur. Well on the nose, this is absolutely lovely. All sorts of sweet fragrances, vanilla to fruit to bubblegum and just a hint of ethanol and maybe some mezcal smoke. Taste is 150% sweet. There’s candied agave and jackfruit in there, but also breakfast cereal marshmallows and circus peanuts, and I don’t level such accusations frivolously. And yet on the finish it remains remarkably thin, with just some very faint whispers of any mezcal smoke, so it could almost be nice. This might be shockingly good if it were 50-55% ABV. But at 40%, it’s a waste of $35 for me – I have no mixes in my repertoire to make this shine. Granted, I can drink and appreciate almost anything. As a mixer – maybe, I’d love to be surprised. As an aperitif/dessert drink, it could have its moments.

8 reviewsNote: This mezcal is sweet because it’s already mixed with agave syrup. You should know this before buying or trying. This is an entry level mezcal to sip or mix and has a nice subtle blend of smoke. You really only need to pour it in a glass with fresh lime juice and your drink is ready or you can use it to make other drinks. This isn’t the bottle to buy for mezcal purists, but it’s a nice touch for those who don’t like mezcal and or want to make the transition.

1 reviewThe folks reviewing Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal as a mezcal are doing this product a serious disservice. It’s like reviewing Grand Marnier as Cognac or Drambuie as Scotch. This is obviously a liqueur, and an excellent one!
I’m not a professional taster, but I will say that if you enjoy such liqueurs as Drambuie and are intrigued by the idea of a mezcal-based cordial this agave sweetened, 80 proof elixir is the beverage of your dreams. Highly recommended- as a superb mezcal liqueur/cordial.

144 reviewsLight smoke, confectioners sugar, faintly fungal, with lots of citrus.
This is getting you halfway to a premade margarita, so take this all with a grain of salt.

9 reviewsThe worst mezcal I have tried. WAYYY too sweet. The flavors are actually nice which makes it a shame the so much agave is added.

668 reviewsThis mezcal contains 10% agave syrup. The sweetness is a bit much for my taste; sipping it just makes me want to drink other Del Maguey espadins. The bottle does mention that this mezcal would make a “great margarita” or enjoyable drizzled over fruits or desserts. This mezcal is fairly inexpensive and doesn’t bill itself as a top-shelf sipping mezcal so don’t expect that if you pick up a bottle. I have a 2015 Batch #3 bottle that I will occasionally take out for tastings or when friends are over.
I should probably follow the advice on the back of the bottle and try it in a margarita next time!

Too sweet for my liking. For those looking for a smooth, easy mezcal sip, not recommended.
