Nuestra Soledad San Luis del Rio

Nuestra Soledad San Luis del Rio is from a small village is tucked away in the mountains, where Espadin grows on steep slopes.

About this mezcal

Nuestra Soledad San Luis del Rio is located east of the Valles Centrales Region.  The small village is tucked away in the mountains, where Espadin is grown on slopes so steep that the harvested pinas need to be rolled down to flat ground before being taken back to the palenque.  The region is intensely hot, which causes early ripening of the agave.

Nuestra Soledad Mezcal

Traditionally, mezcals from different villages have their own distinctive flavors and aromas, which reflect the differences between distilleries, the soil, the local water sources, the wood used, and of course, the nuances created by the hand of the Maestro Mezcalero.  Mezcal Nuestra Soledad is a single village Mezcal that showcases the differences between the villages of Santiago Matatlán, La Compañía Ejutla, San Luis del Rio, and San Baltazar Guelavila. Mezcal Nuestra Soledad (a name which pays homage to Our Lady the Virgin of Solitude, the patron saint of the city of Oaxaca) is born from an ancient tradition and hand-crafted to conserve and retain the centuries-old methods of cultivating and producing this Elixir of the Gods. Each different expression is made from 100% agave Espadín, by the producers of El Jolgorio mezcals, in Oaxaca, Mexico. Check the batch on your bottle, as the ABV may vary slightly.

RMCES130421NS. 2021
Creamy with a warm dry spicy finish. Complex, but just too heavy. Price point is too high as well. I think it’s a decent mixer but I have better cheaper mixers available.

A crisp, citrusy, quality sipper with a creamy finish at a bargain price point.

Nose – Orange citrus, vanilla. Nice aromas you’d expect from an espadin although the smoke was a bit too exhaust-like for me.

Palate – Hot and rough to start and then it smartened up a bit. Mandarin orange flavor, vanilla extract but the rough smoke flavor needed a solid 10-15 minutes to dissipate. This finished decent but too much of a journey to get there. This was a 2 oz. pour in a restaurant. Glad I tried it, not rushing out to buy a bottle though. I’ll still give other bottles from this brand a try though.

One of the sweeter mezcals I’ve come across. Real nice big league chew bubblegum right off the bat with some ash tray on the finish. Affordable and accessible so they get a bit of a bump and if you like fruity/sweet mezcals this is a great option. Nothing complex going on here – just a nice fruity candy vibe.

Poblanos, lightly cheese stuffed etc. Still, it’s happier smelling, more sweet, more lemon blossom up top. Mangos coming through now nicely. Definitely more fruity with time, as expected. Not sure how I got more of a San Luis Potosi vibe at first, but there’s no obvious reason to backspace that, lol. Really coherant, tropical profile now. How odd!

Good, “wet” entry, some slight vegetal tones tease me here too with a mineral heat. Finish is peppery, with traces of fruits in and out, and a little excess heat/dryness.

Maybe other batches are better? Just a little hot and out of balance as soon as you swallow.

Sweet & classic espadin smell. Light butter, some bananas, but with acetone as well. Not too complex. Recently tried the D.M San Luis Del Rio and found that to be much more enjoyable. Price point is great though, and I would drink this neat, or use as a good mixer as there is some smoke & heat to it. Bonus points for the price.

**Batch:** RMCES100419NS

**Nose:** Roasted Bell Peppers, Minerality, Black Pepper, light meaty smoke.

**Palate:** Medium mouthfeel. Tangy, Minerality, Green Bell Peppers, light clean smoke, earthy, acidic.

**Finish:** Medium length, Warm and Dry. Spicy, Green Peppers, Minerality, Earthy.

This is good, it has some nice flavors going on in it, but its not tasty as some of the other expressions, and has a weird off note that accompanies the palate and finish. Still a good showing though.

2015 Batch Here: RMCES100419NS

Delicious and complex although not very in your face. Not a terrible thing. I like this and would easily drink it once more, and again after that.

There are many delicious mezcals produced in San Luis Del Rio and this is one of them. It is at an excellent price point too. This mezcal from Nuestra Soledad has notes of maple, licorice, and white wine. At 48.1% ABV, there is a slight bite in the lingering aftertaste. This lot had a total of 7,200 bottles produced by Javier Nolasco Diaz. Edition 05 from 2015.

Edition 05 from 2015. Slightly nutty aroma with tasting notes of hazelnut, smoke, coffee, and cream. Like other Nuestra Soledad, this is a hot Mezcal, but it’s creamy considering the ABV.
