Palomas Mensajeras Alto

May 11, 2024

Nose reminiscent of a British Christmas cake with dried fruit, spices and whiffs of rum, plus some green top notes of blackcurrant leaves.
Fascinating leather notes akin to the ones you get from some Tuscany red wines, I think they are the ones that some find to tape the tennis ball direction. Then a kind of spiced key lime pie, a bit caramelised. Well integrated alcohol, full mouthfeel, quite rounded. January 2018 batch.

Cinco Elementos Cuishe

Feb 16, 2024

A very correct cuishe, nice craft. Perhaps not very intriguing but very nice. Proper flavours of the slightly darker woods and nuts of this maguey. Medium mouthfeel, nice aftertaste.

Santo Cuviso Blanco

Jan 21, 2024

Peppermint and a bit of fried steak on the nose. Dark toffee sweetness, a touch anise, cooked agave. More “espadin” than bacanoras usually are. Nice for the price. Rather 3.5 without taking that into account.

Sotoleros Lupe Ensamble

Sep 8, 2023

New line possibly: 51% D. Wheeleri and 49% A. Schrevei, Lot 01 Aug. 21. Lovely nose, dusty and sharp but yet immensely deep and intriguing with smoky mint, dark chocolate and sage, light musk.
Flavours are equally sharp and distinct, yet balanced with a sweetness of prickly pear and guava, limestone, chalk, cypress. Full bodied, integrated alcohol. One of the very best bottles out there. Reminds me of Clandé yellow, but perhaps even a tad richer.

400 Conejos Joven

Aug 26, 2023

Well. There are not that many foul flavours. Aromas are very subdued and all flavours fade away in a split second. Not suitable for even cocktails as it adds nothing, but at least the poor quality is more about a lack of flavours than tasting really bad.

La Medida Bicuishe

Aug 6, 2023

Nose: Slate, mineral aromas, coconut shells. I totally agree on the Juicy Fruit bubble gum! Very strange, but yes, I struggled to pinpoint the surprising fruitiness and for once looked at existing reviews before writing notes. A bit woody/nutty/fruity tingling feeling towards the finish. Light smoke, light mouthfeel. Well integrated alcohol, nice mezcal.

Memorable Espadin

Aug 6, 2023

A bit acetone whiff, after a bit of breathing it gives way to earth, smoke, bitter almond, skin of an unripe mango. The palate is rich, sweet with a full mouthfeel; cooked agave, peach kernels, touch of white pepper, lemon peel, bright honey and dried epazote. A brief, slightly bitter and herbal impression midways before a long, sweet aftertaste. For the mezcal itself it’s 4-4.5 but being so inexpensive it must end on a five, because after ten minutes in the glass most of not all of the oddities are gone.

Ojo de Dios Espadin

Aug 1, 2023

Very surprisingly for an espadín, there are both aromas and flavours of unpeeled almond, perhaps even a marzipan sweetness for a second. Pralines, then rich agave flavours, nice structure. I am probably bumping half a star for the price, but this is a really nice offering. Light to medium smoke. If you can find this, you have an excellent mixer and brilliant on its own if you want to introduce mezcal to someone who is new to the concept.

Alma Libre Cuishe

Jul 31, 2023

Aromas of wet clay, grapefruit peel and maybe some herbal spice, a little bit smoke. More citrus on the palate, fresh, really nice. Less minerality than the nose hints at, some spice, Brazil nut. Well integrated alcohol, good mouthfeel. Edit: I felt I needed to bump half a star due to the surprisingly low price point, so that the premises of my reviews are more consistent.
Lot 1C, bottle 78

La Medida Tepeztate

May 26, 2023

Green chill invades the nostrils, supported by a team of sweetmyrtle bushes — strong and nice nose. Green peppers, cucumber skin, watermelon and guavas on the palate. Well structured and integrated alcohol. I feel that La Medida and Memorable are both underrated brands. Lot MIA-2101H 2021

Memorable Tobasiche

May 26, 2023

Another fantastic, and most Memorable mezcal… Smells of raspberry jam and dusty loft, some grass, a bit like raw sugarcane. Raspberry liqueur, blackcurrant leafs, toasted hazelnuts, dried epazote. Lingering forever. A karwinskii on the fruitier side, really lovely. Memorable mezcales are in general really, really good.
2017 batch

Memorable Bicuishe

Apr 12, 2023

What a great surprise! Very nice, sweet touch to this one. I think it might be my first karwinskii that is distilled con refrescador, and I believe, as I often do, that it kind of concentrates the distinct agave species’ specificity. Coconut with brown skin, peanuts, but sort of caramelised like French pralines. Full mouthfeel, great structure. Yum.

El Jolgorio Pechuga

Apr 12, 2023

A bit faint nose, but very pleasant vanilla and blueberry notes if you sniff deeply.
Fantastic burst of fruitiness at first on the palate. Guava, unripe banana, blueberry, fresh flavours of a pitcher of ice water with cucumber slices. Eventually meaty, savoury flavours of grilled chicken skin come through, some nice, discreet herbal hints too. Really nice pechuga. Supposedly recent import, but no batch.

Real Minero Barril, Espadin, Tobala

Apr 3, 2023

A bit muted nose, with some musty forest, freshly chopped coconut and toasted wood. On the palate, prickly pear, Brazil nuts, some exotically flavoured jelly bean from a distant past. Great structure and minerality as always from Real Minero.
In one sense, this is a bit difficult to rate, because I found that the blend was kind of muting all the three magueyes’ distinct qualities. Still a wonderful spirit though.

Bruxo No. 4 Ensamble

Mar 24, 2023

A bit muted nose with some dust and acetone, wet birch trees. Orange peel, cocoa nibs, Brazil nuts, a bit woody. Unusual profile, reminds me about mezcal from Tamaulipas, with a hint of woody madrecuixe. Nice.

Pierde Almas Coyote

Mar 17, 2023

Best coyote I’ve had, maybe. Nose: Virginia tobacco and tanned leather, a bit smoke too. Earthy and mineral notes on the palate, but yet light. Charentais melon, papaya, lavender, chamomile, allspice. Great structure and integrated alcohol.

Aguerrido Cupreata – Don Antonio

Mar 7, 2023

Very clean cupreata, smells of fresh sugarcane, dust, light smoke. Green chartreuse flavours, cucumber, cocoa nibs — more crisp than most cupreatas I have tried but not thin. Medium mouthfeel, good structure. 2021 batch, 49,7% ABV, 50cl bottle. Not quite the same 2021 batch COak mentioned, seems it was bottled in Europe.

Palenqueros Espadin – Sierra Negra

Mar 1, 2023

Quite a bit dust and acetone aromas. Also a brief hint of tar like an Islay whisky, some leather. Well rounded on the palate. Hint of melon and bitter almond, allspice, light smoke, lightly smoked. Pretty good structure and lingering aftertaste of roasted agave and fresh sugarcane like you get from rhum agricole.

Real Minero Cuishe

Feb 25, 2023

Delicious, it’s sweet like their Espadín with chocolate and French praliné notes (candied nuts). Well structured as you’d expect from this label, great clay/flint minerality.

Lalocura Arroqueno

Feb 19, 2023

Wow. Absolutely astonishing bottle. Smells like northern, wet marshland in the spring, a bit peaty smoke, cucumber salad. On the palate, lots of Lalo’s signature smoke and clay; beechwood smoke, muscovado sugar and flint, British Christmas cake, allspice and that fresh melon taste of the arroqueño (Charentais/cantaloupe). Wild heather honey aftertaste. Up there with his San Martinero.
2020 batch, 47,9 %. Unusually nice and legible handwriting on the bottle for being Lalocura…
