Bizare in a good way. The flavor reminds me of fresh sage and the nose gives a warm feeling of heat. The bottle is a novelty and the flavor/aroma stands tall.
My favorite part of tasting any mezcal is first smelling it and I get little to nothing on the nose here. I would have liked to have gotten an over cooked agave bouquet. Although, the flavor holds up in cocktails if you are looking for a muted amount of smoke. This to me is a good product in the “entry level” category.
Coming from the Mezcal capital, Santiago Matatlan, I was expecting so much more. Extremely light and thin, fading out and leaving me wanting something heavier. This brand is not using a traditional process either, no tahona stone milling- which is also disappointing. I would recommend this in a “crowd pleasing” cocktail, if any, where the smokiness can easily be hidden . The price is almost double of what most quality Espadin’s are coming in at.
Very delicious and very different. I am a fan of salted caramel composition. The smoke is lighter than most Raicilla, but overall well balanced. I would recommend putting this on a flight, next to a tepeztate and an Espadin to show how different it really is.
Expecting the usual earthiness most Espadin’s embody, I was pleasantly surprised by the profound vegetal notes in Papa Rey. There is a nice balance of minerality that is followed by a floral and grassy finish. This mezcal does not fall off short, leaving a pleasant, lingering creamy mouth feel. The smoke is not so heavy that one must mix in an ounce of tequila to round out cocktails. I suggest using 2 ounces of Papa Rey to showcase the natural balance of smoke and spice in cocktails. This mezcal is worth every penny.
Absolutely interesting with a bold fennel & celery forward plate that lightens up with a citrus/grapefruit finish. High heat being 48.2% that is masked by the complexity of flavor. Very easy to drink.
Overwhelmingly vegetal and savory. On the nose, almost resembles a dirty martini, with almost a celery, sea salt and olive brine bouquet. Very interesting and complex.
