Palenqueros Ensamble Cinco Magueyes

Aug 23, 2024

Freshly opened on the nose I get buttery rum, leathery cologne, woody varnish. A genuinely incredible smelling Mezcal! Flavour wise there’s a nice evolution, and the finish has a lovely cucumber-skin bittersweetness that sticks around. Second time around after some time on the shelf; the nose has flame roasted pepper, oak aged rum and something reminiscent of petrichor. Palate has leather, szechuan peppercorn, lavender, chalk.
For me personally I think there’s maybe one too many things going on, only as I found it hard to get all those individual agave nuances out of it, but I can also see that as a compliment to how well balanced it is. A really delicious ensamble, especially on the nose!

Madre Espadin – Cuishe

Aug 14, 2024

Nose sweet, faint herbs. Palate was surprisingly hot for the abv, but I enjoyed the creamy texture. Not a crazy complex ensamble by any means, but definitely solid enough. Mostly vegetal, crunchy greens, bell pepper, celery. Finish nice, you eventually do get that cuishe at the backend, and there’s a little gentian like bitterness there lingering.
Easy to find in bottle shops and bars near me, but imo there’s better for the price point if willing to go further afield.

La Medida Espadin

Accessible and fantastic value.
Nose is mint, soft smoke, rubber. Quite a straight line palate wise; peppermint, slate, citrus, that finishes quite abruptly. Nothing I didn’t like, just not anything too wild. Surprisingly down at 40%. Straight forward and sippable!

Koch Barril

Aug 14, 2024

Nose floral, marker pen, orange oils. Woody after opening up, tree sap. Palate saline, funk, mineral, a little charcoal, fairly light/thin mouthfeel. Finish leans savoury, salty, honey roast ham, subtle peanut/nuttiness. First from the Koch lineup for me. Won’t be an everyday pour, but interesting enough!
