Ladies and Gentlemen, meet the winner, that’s if you get the first batch – MP01. I went through four bottles and it was consistently awesome. Right ratio of Mole spices to Chocolate. Last two bottles not so much (MP04-18 and MP05-18). More chocolate and less mole. I think I’ll stick with Asunción Matilde’s Mole Pechugas.
Minero, almost, if not as good as Vago’s Espadin en Barro by Tío Rey.
This is good. Double bubblegum on the nose. A little smoky and fruity on the palate and finishes with a salsa imprint.
Hard to stop sipping this one. It is right up there with 5 Sentidos Pechuga de Mole Poblano.
Right amount of smoke, vanilla, and butter pecans. This is the one to offer to first timers.
Batch EN01, 47.9%, 7/66. Very leathery tack room funk for the first third of bottle. Ended up taking top off for 4-5 hours for a couple of days and it came out of the shell. The last third was nothing like the first. Superbly smooth and fruity.
Very complex, nose it and you’d think is Pechuga. Frontal assault of sugarcane and pinole transitioning to mole, dark chocolate and finishing with spicy Serrano fire. Very smart spirit.
Mezcal Arroqueño is Wonderful. I’ve tried Mezcaloteca’s and now this. Oily, minty, chocolatey with a hint of chiles. Get it at Moreno’s (Chicago) while it lasts.
Another entry level mezcal. Fortunately priced correctly. Hospital aroma, smoky oily ethanol taste then, a light disappearing act.
Reminds me of Deep Purple…“Smoooooke on the water”… Entry level. Finish bottle first before buying anything else otherwise you’ll be wondering what to do with the rest. Probably good in cocktails if you’re into that sort of thing.
LOT A-11-DV-M-13, 90/10 blend, 49.4%, fermented in July 2013.
From Moreno’s Store in Chicago. Talk about a living mezcal. Got home in the afternoon and was anxious to try. Forgot I’d hardly eaten all day. Smelled like rubbing alcohol. What can go wrong, right? Within seconds, synapses started short-circuiting and the peripheral hallucinations got my attention. This mezcal scolded my arse for being careless. Barn funk, Oma’s armoire, wet dirt, minerals in the nose and taste the spiciness and fire roasting your tongue.
A lot more simpatico and forgiving after an offering of pastor tacos.
