Heat and smoke of roasted jalapeño, poblano and green bell peppers. Funk of prune yogurt and ricotta cheese. Sweetness of chocolate chip oatmeal cookies and christmas baking. Sweet flavors but a dry finish.
The alcohol is a tad to hot, only thing preventing this from becoming #hunnits
I straight up laughed when I first smelt this one. ‘What the **** am I drinking?’ Initially wasn’t a fan of raicilla, but the spirits been grew on me a lot when I was in Puerto Vallarta in April.
Aroma of Old Dutch Sour Cream & Cheddar chips, grapefruit Jelly Belly and grass after a rainstorm.
Somehow these flavors blend amazingly together.
Savory notes of onion, parsley and bit of parm. Sweet grapefruit Jarritos and vanilla frosting. A tart berry I can’t put a name on.
The mouthfeel got some getting used to, as it’s got this certain viscosity I associate with a certain rough night of Cointreau shots.
Not what I’d call a crowd pleaser, but a unique spirit definitely worth picking up for a unique agave adventure.
Also, easily worth the price point.
Got a bottle of the Costa on the way, eyeing the Volcanes and Tabernas too
I was saying to a friend that I loved the funky, clay mezcals from Minas, so he recommended I get some of Alberta Martinez’ juice.
Meaty like coal-grilled beef, clay and charred wood right away on the nose follwed by banana pudding and cinnamon.
Roasted nuts, cinnamon and a bit of spicy numbing habanero on the front of the tongue. Funky pulque and earthy clay.
Sweet and peppery, smoky roasted agave on the middle. Some tropical notes of guava, cherimoya, banana and black cherry on the back. Followed by and exhale of campfire smoke and toasted chili chapulines.
The jabali gives it a sweet, funky, tropical kick and the tobala balances it out with a herbal, peppery zip.
My kind of Mezcal
Bottle 58/65. I had a sip of this initially at El Destilado last November and loved it, but boought a bottle of Puntas instead. Recently this came to Canada almost as if it was meant to be. I’m not one to deny fate, so I bought a bottle. Delicious!
On the nose I get sweet n sour Green apple Jolly Ranchers and churros. Grassy, herbal and dandelions. Theres also an animalistic, meaty kind of aroma to it, but if given blind I’d never think of beetles.
The first time I tried this I had a fuzzy, stinging sensation on the lips, but not getting it the second time around. A little sting on the initial kiss, but its replaced by mezcal warmth immediately after.
Halloween caramel apples, toasted cinnamon, Piloncillo, fresh garden greens and jalapeno spice. Light barnyardy funk. Lots of salty minerality. Fairly new to Cupreatas (and Guerrero Mezcales in general), but this reminds me of a few of the Tepeztates aka Becuelas I had out in SM Minas. Definitely on the savory side, but a nice balance of sweet and tart to mellow things out.
One of my favourites from 5 Sentidos
Flying back from Mazatlan, I knew I had a bottle of this San Andres waiting for me at home. I saw the San Andres XX for $900🇲🇽 and I thought it’d be a neat side-by-side.
Can’t believe how different the two are from the same producer!
Starwberry Greek yogurt on the aroma follwed by a banana/soursop sweetness.
A light lactic funk that I adore in Mezcal! Berries, vanilla, rocks. Canadian forest fires. Annonaceae fruita like Guanabana, soursop, cherimoya or Amazonian cupuaçu. Lightly floral. A pronounced flavor of pouring fresh dirt in the garden.
Roasted, juicy agave juice. Like the charred pineapple of Al Pastor.
More sweet and unbalanced as the San Andres XX, in a good way.
A fun, fruity, funky Mezcal.
Bottle 1518/3076.
I was pleasantly surprised to see this guy in the Duty-Free store one my flight back from Mazatlan! $900🇲🇽 and costs nearly triple in my area. I had a bottle of the regular San Andres waiting for me at home, so I thought it’d be a neat side-by-side.
Can’t believe how different the two are from the same producer!
Hard to pick out specific notes as this Mezcal is so well balanced, the flavors balance out amazingly.
Floral and earthy aromas right away. Like being back in the Bouchart Gardens of Victoria. Rai water. Rose and Lavender. Dubble Bubble Gum (with the jokes inside the wrapper?) Strawberry Go-gurt. Lightly charred Rosemary. Very little booze for 95 proof.
Tastes like the smell of Oaxaca de Juarez at night. The trees and the air. Toasted cinnamon, underripe banana, earthy minerality. Like piclkng wild berries and eating the one that which fell to the ground.
A soothing, sipper to enjoy in the summer sun.
I let it sit for 15/20 minutes in the glass to develop. Straight from the bottle it was a little less balanced and a lttle more boozier.
I’ve been sipping a lot of non-Oaxacan mezcals lately. Mostly Durango.
On first sniff, I my brain had a flashback to driving through the Albaraddas of Oaxaca. Mountainous minerality. Faint whifs of barbacoa as I passed by the towns.
Sweet roasted agave juice, underripe pineapple and unwashed, dirty, underripe raspberries from my grandmother’s garden. Fresh Pulque funk. And some cow-farm snifs.
The mouthfeel is a little sharp on the first kiss, but smooths out and warms the body. She’s good, man. By the third sip it’s sharpness replaces itself with a calm, relaxed warmth reminiscent of Oaxacan sunset. You start chilling.
Minerality. Toasted cinnamon takes over for a quick dance.
A fermentation smell I will only ever associate with Oaxaca comes next. Similar barnyard funk to Santa Catarina Minas but more subtle. I love ‘em both
Toasted Thyme, too? Probably
Reminds me of smells on my small farms as a child. And some less-than-reputable backwoods parties I’ve attended.
Bull-like, dirty and aggressive. But a sweet, fruity charm to it.
Never heard of it, saw it was from Durango so instantly bought it. My grandfather speaks highly of Durango.
I’ve had a few Durango mezcals and loved (most of) them.
This one’s got the vibe of the other ones I’ve had, but different flavors (make sense?)
More funk than expected! And I love it. Baking spice, light smoke, dark Chocolate without the bitterness. A sweet New York Cheesecake.
Mint chocolate cream cheese on a sourdough bagel… smoked by a Texan pit for an hour.
Maaaybe a little to ‘Cointreau’ sweet mouthfeel, but the flavours are amazing!
A lotta campfire smoke on the nose, a sourdough, Pulque fermentation. Vegetal and floral. But nothing specific.
A smoky boy! Warms up the body instantly! Not a lot of booze on the palate. Estados Unidos Apple Pie and Cinnamon.
A classic Ensemble. If this was aged in glass for a few years, I think it’d round out beautifully. All the notes of Classic Espadin I first fell in love with Mezcal for… just a little ‘edgy’
For the price point? I’ll buy every time I see it! But I don’t rate based on price anymore
Edition 5. And it deserves 5 stars
Aroma blew me away. Perhaps the best Espadin I’ve had outside of Santa Catarina Minas.
Fresh roasted, sweet smoky Piñas and either Blue Raspberry or Green apple SweeTarts candy. The sniff of cutting fresh jalapeños in the air.
Tropical and citrus tones, but mainly pure roasted Piña. A light Piloncillo, and a vegetal Green Bell Pepper. A Cachaca vibe somehow.
Only thing I don’t like? The price! I splurged $75cad for the 375ml… but now I gotta get the Cuishe and Madrecuishe too. $75 about to cost +$300
Happy mistake.
Drank this one in an Irish pub in Mexico City right before watching the Luchas in Arena Mexico.
I don’t have specific memories of the flavors, I just remember it being a little spicy and tropical, earthy and very easy sipping for +100 proof.
Loving those Durango Mezcales!
Drank at El Destilado. Definitely got big Pineapple notes and smoky chicken. Really enjoyed it
I remember liking this one a lot more, in fact it intrigued me to the rabbit hole of Mezcal…
years later and….
Tasted it again and it’s just like a gringo party tequila and bad islay scotch mixed.
The George Clooney name is cool. I don’t mind that celebrity.
Extra point for nostalgia, -point for the price
Holy jalapeños! Spicy, herbal, savory and zesty. If you’re a fan of the spicier mezcals, definitely give this one a go!
Wouldn’t really guess this to be a Mezcal if it wasn’t labeled as one. A really good Tequila-esque spirit. Pepper and agave forward. A very, very light smoke.
4.25/5 Reminds me of camping in the Northern Canadian forest, eh.
Cedar smoke, moss and a smouldering fire pit from the bbq the night before. Fresh spring air.
An unusual but really good Sotol!
