Marca Negra Ensamble

Sep 23, 2024

Batch HMC1-22 Bottle 1257 (BP) Basilio Pacheco, 47.2%.

nose: warm roast, pine, subtle
palette: finish is nice, round, warm and full front, leading to a bright light floral finish. nothing stood out for me on this one but it certainly wasnt bad. maybe the mole beforehand mellowed it out. XD

Marca Negra Tobala

Sep 22, 2024

HMBL-23 bottle 544. 46.8%, Las Margaritas, Tlacolula, Petronilo Altamirano,

aroma: citrus, orange, astringent medicinal, grassy
palette: floral, herbs, papaya light fruit, citrus pith, lavender, bright.
tasty but surprised of this tobala character unique profile for the agave from my tasting experience.

Ixcateco Papalome

Sep 22, 2024

Have had few bottles of this (and under other labels). It’s sort of a goto I gift people (dinner parties) if they dabble with mezcal but are not too familiar. to me this is round profile, warm, full, coffeeish, leather, its probably knowing the fermentation method but I think hide and soil. I get sweet hay like chocolate butterscotch notes. dare i say mild but something about it is balanced and resonates at a volume that is not too loud. approachable but a bit funky and different. solid and aways down to enjoy!

Tepanal Arroqueño

Sep 17, 2024

Batch AR2100 Bottle 120 / 132. 50% ABV

Aroma: spice of cinnamon or clove. shaved bark. musty.
Palette: earthy, light spice, woody, getting the clay minerals rounding this out. this one helped me to hone in on arroqueño single ag. species , (an agave that can take decades to mature). pretty special stuff.

El Destilado Papalome

Sep 5, 2024

A pour while out in London (Madera Treehouse) regret not getting better photos and info! (blurry) so forgive my short review.. Solid and preferable over the other labels bottling’s Ive had. Aromatic, full body. I did think this label has some text discrepancies on it but i’ve been know to be wrong so I kept my mouth shut other than to enjoy the delicious creation 🙂

El Destilado Pechuga de Mole Poblano

Sep 5, 2024

A pour while out in London (Madera Treehouse) regret not getting better photos and info! (blurry) so forgive my lackluster review other than wowza this was tasty. It was full on aroma and mouth explosion. Have had the 5S before but this one really took me for a ride. If you come across it, indulge.

Campanilla del Palmar Cuerno – Jaime Navarro

Aug 7, 2024

April 2023, 100 liters, 50.90% abv
sipped in a veladora glass. first impressions are that this has reservations, an agave introvert.
aroma: calm, moldy mushrooms. unripe berries whilst they are green, citrus. enjoying the aroma more as the liquid line drops. drifting into olive oil territory.
palette: floral up front, cedar note, olives, cooked collard greens. I’m imagining dried out agave strands where you get a gentle toasty flavor before a sweet droplet finds the light and hits your tongue.
finish: short burst with light fade of citrus, mineral floral with a musty undertone.
general notes: good. lacks some punch to me. at this moment on the verge of bitter or chemical. however overall pleasant. surprised its 50 abv. I look forward to tasting it again.

Campanilla del Palmar Verde – Jaime Navarro

Aug 7, 2024

March 2023, 100 liter, 48.90% abv. sample.
sipped in a veladora glass. Oh my, first nose this is delightful. teleported to SLP (or rather what I imagine based on the various salmaiana’s destilado de agave from there!!)
aroma: fresh cut greens, candied peppers, hint of cinnamon or maple. cooked fruit, banana, date and cantaloupe. I could hang on this aroma just talking and talking before realizing I haven’t yet taken a sip 😀
palette: that went a different direction than I was expecting! more of the woody spice world. minerals, anise, cant quite pinpoint..cooked artichoke? rosemary?? regardless its delightful!
finish: sweet finish, pithy grapefruit, mint.
general notes: a very pleasant heat on this, in the way I want to have it there. Like its pushing the flavors forward letting you know they’re knocking on the door. dare I say Im getting some jabali vibes on this. or how about I say delicious a. salmiana ssp crassispina ‘Verde’ 🙂 !!

Maguey Melate Tequilana – J. Refugio Pineda Cruz

Jul 19, 2024

raicilla aroma notes. lactic wood bark. sweet cedar great tasty. guessing those 3 weeks of fermentation are shaping this one quite a bit. well balanced. the tequilana notes peak out midway in but its not reminiscent of any blues I’ve had.. overall delicious!

Maguey Melate Tequilana – Emanuel Ramos

Jul 19, 2024

Batch EMA-TEQ-001
aroma is mild, clean, has the Ramos familiarity. its good, fresh, hints of tequila notes but nothing is overwhelmingly punctual. ..some notes are reminiscent of arroqueño. I think it’s actually quite balanced, modest, very drinkable. relaxed. they should call this tranquilo rather than tequilero 😀 having been to their palenque this has a place in my heart. He’s got a good thing going.

Maguey Melate Arroqueno – Nazario Salas Rosas

Jul 19, 2024

NAZ-ARR-001
hot diggity. Im all about this from first sniff. right up my alley. sweet green chilis. hot candied jalapeño. cucumber. green, fresh. slight pine. reminiscent to SLP salmiana. would never have guessed was arroqueño. really like this. would like to try more from this producer. Am really stretching out my last ounce…

Maguey Melate Lechuguilla – Agapito Yepiz Vega

Jul 19, 2024

batch AGA-LEC-001.
floral orange rind. citrus. butterscotch aroma. this is a trip. its dusty. dry earth. am sure this will not be everyones cup of tea but I def enjoyed this. bottle is now empty.

Maguey Melate Sierra Negra – Everardo López Diego

Jul 18, 2024

batch EVE-SIE-002 bottle 112.
finding this to be light on the aroma. sweet and subtle. melon. wet inside of bark peel. might need to aroma.
delicious. caramel custard tropical fruit front with slight spice finish.

Maguey Melate Espadin – Heladio López Luis

Jul 18, 2024

batch HEL-ESB-001 bottle 300. 350 liters June 2023.
Agua de Tierra Blanca:
roasted sweet potato aroma. gentle heat, warm long finish. bright, minerals. very close between the 2. tasty nonetheless.

Rio Chico (mini bottle)
finding this aroma to have a slightly sweet cinnamon dulce vibe going. hint of cheese. also a gentle heat, long finish. I cant pinpoint these notes but I find it to be heightened in this one between the 2. earthy peat, woody. bitter dry cooked fruit. very similar. I prefer this one over the other by a hair.

Macurichos Ancestral Arroqueño

Jun 20, 2024

distillation date December 2019. Lote: AQ-002. bottle 169/240. 52.13%abv
first impressions on neck pour after a handful of other mezcal, I found it surprisingly hot and medicinal, almost unfamiliar to arroqueño i was expecting. On a new day with little breathing room for the bottle, however, it’s settled into its own and reveals a delightful arroqueño! I now see those really heightened notes I got day 1 have stretched their legs. I get a light leathery clove spice note on the nose, a hint of sawdust. on the palate, while its still noticeably topping 50% small sips burst with flavor. someone said banana and ya I get some of that along with the light woody, dried fruit, molasses/ brown sugar.

Gracias a Dios Tepextate

Jun 19, 2024

welcoming aroma, subtle but refreshing. tasty. overall solid option. sry no batch info. (my guess is a bottling from 2021ish)
green, vegetal, not quite peppery and the brightness was a little dull, but again it was plenty drinkable and I’m sure many people would appreciate this as it was certainly not off putting like some other rough ones.

Rambha Tobasiche

May 26, 2024
