Palomas Mensajeras Chino, Alto, Mexicano

Feb 3, 2024

Some really bright citrusy elements on the nose that mingle with a woodsy, twiggy note, plus a mix of herbs: marjoram, wormwood, dried basil. It’s super complex, mostly in a straight-forward inviting way, but also a little bit challenging – there’s a hint of VA, though honestly it dissipates super fast that it’s barely worth mentioning. I’m loving it on the nose.

Palate totally lands it: all those elements from the aromatics are there, plus a fun bittersweet note that plays around, jumping from salty-sweet kettle corn to roasted parsnips to creamy corn chowder and a sprinkling of tarragon. Very fun, very lively, thoroughly engaging, and an utter delight.

For the price this is a stunner – easily as fascinating as some $100+ bottles out there.

On the nose there is salt, sweet, and spice all interplaying; peanut brittle, mango, piquín pepper, and a little smoky bacon fat. It pulls me in and I just want to stay there forever.

Palate definitely throws more of that meaty/bacon fat thing, but also a little wet stone/slate quality after you adjust to it. And some sweetness really comes out with a little air, but never so much that it dominates, just stays right there curbing the intensity fo the savoury side. My first mezcal from these folks and it’s totally awesome.

Also, for the cheeseheads out there: GREAT PAIRING for an oozey, mushroom-y soft cheese, like a Pierre Robert or Jasper Hill Harbison!

Wow, what a fruit-filled pechuga! The nose is all sorts of fruit and sweet notes: freeze-dried strawberry, pineapple, mango, chocolate cake frosting…it’s a sweetness in a really nice way, but it’s not really until the palate that you get more of the savory, umami qualities one might expect of a pechuga. I’m not complaining, though, ‘cuz on the palate the balance between those arms wide open sweet fruity flavors and the meatier, herbal notes is a real delight to experience. Finish is fairly crisp and poised, maybe with a little bite of orange oil to keep the flavors going. This is pretty special stuff and I can’t wait to share a full bottle with others.
