Nice Arroqueño with notes of wet earth and lots of tropical fruits. I would like to try more from this brand.
Lot 12-17. Freshly cut roses, caramel candy, clove, cinnamon, long spice-filled finish. Mmmm…
Very soft, a bit watery. Fresh jalapeño and green bell pepper. It’s just ok, pretty boring.
Lot 1. Raw leafy vegetables, asparagus, sage, thyme, herbal tea and anise. Interesting Sotol.
Lot 2. Very one note. ANISE!! I tried my hardest to discern any other flavors but all I got was anise. The Pernod of Sotols. 2.5 stars.
Lot 2. March 2019. Lupe Lopez. I wish that I had written down the year and the producer for that last one I tasted! This one is completely different! It’s in the red bottle but is 100% agave Angustifolia Haw, the batch is only 38 Liters. This is remarkable! It’s like drinking the desert! All earth and minerals. I didn’t get anything else, no fruits, no herbs, no flowers or spices. Just pure desert. I absolutely love this! 5 stars.
Lot 1, December 2018, Lupe Lopez. Angustifolia Haw. Smells like cucumber yogurt raita. A citrus bomb!! Tangerines, oranges, satsumas, bbq sauce, bbq pineapple, and cotton candy. 4 stars
Lot 275. Creamy and hot. Pineapples and fresh orange blossoms. Pleasant mezcal lacking complexity. Great price!
Lot 0364. Spicy, menthol, green jalapeño, bell pepper, cinnamon, vanilla. Good cuixe for the price point.
Spearmint, wood fired tri-tip steak, banana, magnolia flower, roasted pineapple, and brown sugar. Yum. I like the Mezcalero series a lot!
Lot 01. Strawberries!!! I can’t remember a Mezcal that tasted this much like strawberries! Also anise, caramel, roses, freshly turned soil, and peppermint. The smell was like freshly made cotija cheese.
Lot 00118. Smells of chemicals, my girlfriend and I were trying to figure out what the smell reminded us of and we decided it was like the smell you get walking into an auto mechanic shop. Motor oil and many unidentifiable chemicals. Tastes very strongly of sandlewood, with faint notes of candy corns, pine, and wood varnish. The finish is sour and bitter like grapefruit seed extract.
Lot 00218. Fresh jalapeño, fresh bell pepper, peppermint candy, bitter gentiane root, chocolate, quite salty with a sour and bitter finish.
Lot 00818. Distilled in clay. A good start with Mexican chocolate, roasted ancho chile, pineapple, clove, and cayenne pepper. The finish however I didn’t like, faintly chemical with rubbing alcohol and sour bitter grapefruit pith.
Lot 00918. Roses, artichoke, soft wood smoke, allspice. Pleasant mezcal. 3 stars.
Lot 00617 chemical smell like nail polish remover. Caramel, black pepper, red pepper flakes, finish is hot and more nail polish remover. 2 stars.
I like this. It’s hot and really spicy with some fresh jalapeño, vanilla, and white pepper. More of a mixer then a sipper.
CH04-16. Thin and watery with a distracting band-aid flavor, some artichoke and brown sugar but mostly band-aid.
Well made, fresh, clean Espadin. A little salty, fruity, and floral. Frangipani flower, papaya, over-ripe banana, and brown sugar. A really nice Mezcal for the price.
MC-01. Classic Madrecuixe. Spearmint, fresh green pepper, rosewater, and fennel seed. Just delicious!
JB-01. If I had only had a small taste of this I would have ranked it a little lower, luckily I have a whole bottle. This is one of those magical Mezcals that keeps changing with every sip. There are a lot of layers to this one. It has a creamy mouthfeel and is sweet, fruity, floral, and woody. There is a strong wood flavor that to me resembles oak. I’m also tasting roasted pineapple, bubblegum, jasmine, and crushed granite rock. I really want to do a blind tasting along with the Rey Campero, El Jolgorio, and Del Maguey Jabali.
Edition unknown. Delicious! I wish I could have had more of it but it was quite expensive for a small sample, hopefully next time we go to Mezcalogia in Oaxaca they will have a bottle. I got some tasty sweet and savory notes of roasted yams, brown butter, and bubblegum. 4.5 stars
Edition 03, 2018, Pedro Vasquez, Black bottle. Tasted at Mezcalogia in Oaxaca. Fresh jalapeño, whipped cream, coconut milk, cream cheese, briny capers. Delicious. 5 stars.
Lot T-016 136/240. The other review of this one really surprises me! It must’ve really mellowed out over time! This was smooth, with no alcohol burn whatsoever. Fruity and floral like banana pudding in a flower market. A nice long allspice finish. A really good expression of Tobala.
