I’m a wildlife biologist who does seasonal work half of the year and travels the world for the other half. I became interested/obsessed with Mezcal in 2016 during a 6 month trip through Mexico.

Maguey Melate Cuixe – German Manzano Martinez

Feb 16, 2022

This is a delicious Mezcal!!! I’m getting a tropical vibe from it, it reminds me of a beach in Thailand for some reason. It’s light, fruity, and floral with jasmine, mango, fresh squeezed orange juice, satsumas, vanilla cupcakes, mangosteens, bay leaves, and orange blossom water. I love this one.

Maguey Melate Tepextate / Cuixe – Flavio Cesar

Feb 16, 2022

This one definitely improved after it had been open awhile. Chocolate-y and smoky with flavors of brown M&M’s, fresh banana, cigarette butts, river rocks, wood varnish, cedar, and mint chip ice cream.

400 Conejos Joven

Feb 16, 2022

It seems like this Mezcal is in every bar in Mexico. If they only have one Mezcal, it’s probably 400 Conejos. I don’t hate it, I can see why people who don’t like Mezcal like this one. It’s very “smooth”, no alcohol burn at all in fact. Not much flavor either unfortunately, some vanilla, a faint hint of burnt electrical wiring. Instantly forgettable.

Señor Sotol Ensamble

Feb 8, 2022

001-SSE. I love this Sotol!!! It reminds me of fresh hot apple pie. Clove, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, and baked apples. I’m definitely buying a bottle of this. I added an extra half a star because it’s only $40 a bottle.

Montelobos Tobala

Feb 8, 2022

RI6751. Lavender, fresh ripe pears, vanilla, and cold butter. It’s pretty hot though with some rubbing alcohol notes that I’m not crazy about.

Montelobos Pechuga

Feb 8, 2022

PH7157. This is a really tasty Pechuga. Brown sugar, mole poblano, vanilla ice cream, pineapple, chocolate frosting, and toasted marshmallows.

Papadiablo Espadin

Feb 8, 2022

Didn’t get the batch number. I really like this brand but this is my least favorite expression. Cinnamon Toast Crunch, fresh cream, orange creamsicle, dryer sheets, and red Tic Tacs.

Rey Campero Mexicano

Feb 8, 2022

DS010-M. This one’s all over the place! I’m tasting completely different flavors from one sip to the next. Orange pith, table salt, vanilla extract, cream soda, olive brine, cayenne pepper, and caramel. Interesting.

Aguamiel Bacanora Blanco

Feb 8, 2022

09-08-2008. Wow! I did not expect to like this one but it’s really tasty! Like a dessert Bacanora. Cake frosting, and horchata. Yum. I’d love to try this at a higher ABV. By the lot number it looks like it’s sitting around for 14 years!

La Venenosa Raicilla Costa

Jan 15, 2022

Lote: 32. 01/21.
I don’t think that I would have liked this as much a couple of years ago but I’ve developed a love of Raicilla and this is a tasty one! Cheesy and sour at first but as it hits my mouth it evolves into something sweet and spicy and unique. Blue cheese, caramel, guanabana (soursop), barbecue sauce, burnt marshmallow, cacao, cinnamon, clove. I really dig this one!

Gracias a Dios Madre Cuishe

Lot: 01MCUISHE20 303
Very floral and tropical!! Perfume, jasmine, mango, kiwi, and fresh basil. There’s something metallic that reminds me of copper coated pennies. I enjoyed this one.

5 Sentidos Pechuga de Mole Poblano

Dec 28, 2021

Lot: MP07-18M
Just had this for the first time in a couple years and I am reminded of how much I love this Pechuga!! Nutty and chocolatey and spicy and funky with tons of umami, this Mezcal is just delicious!! The power of suggestion is strong when tasting Mezcal and when I read the reviewer mention that it smelled like “reptile terrarium” it totally clicked for me. What a great tasting note!!! I’m also getting the Campbell’s Tomato Soup flavor. What a cool, complex, unique, and interesting Mezcal!!!

Alipus Destilado en Barro (San Miguel Sola)

Dark black wet clay with roots and leaves in it, forest decay, black licorice. Delicious.

Vago Espadin en Barro

Jul 10, 2021

S-08-E-19. Like drinking chocolate milk out of an unglazed clay mug while eating a perfectly ripe cantaloupe melon. Very nice batch.

La Venenosa Raicilla Sierra del Tigre

Jul 10, 2021

This is one of the most polarizing agave spirits I’ve ever come across. In a recent Raicilla tasting two of our group loved it and the rest couldn’t stand it. I appreciate it for its uniqueness but I probably wouldn’t reach for it often if I had a bottle. Apparently the still that he uses to make this is quite unique, I’d love to visit his Taberna. As for the tasting notes… when I lived in Thailand there was a fermented yogurt drink called Yakult that we would drink to settle our stomach’s when we weren’t feeling well. This spirit reminds me of Yakult. Fermented milk, dried aged Mexican cheese, sour Pulque, the slight sweetness of fruit on the edge of rotting, and dirt. Definitely worth trying because you may just love it.

La Venenosa Puntas

Jul 10, 2021

I’ve always been a big fan of Gerardo Peñas Puntas. It blows my mind how soft and well integrated this is at 63% ABV. Almost no burn and tons of flavor. I get lots of powerful menthol flavors and strong herbal notes that remind me of fresh lemon thyme. It’s probably not for everyone but it’s unique and I love it!

Lobo de la Sierra Raicilla

Jul 10, 2021

Very light and subtle but quite delicious. I’m curious what this would taste like at 48%. Cinnamon, fresh, mint, and light earthiness. Tasty.

Mezcalero No. 11

Jun 26, 2021

Tried this in a bar, first time in a bar in 15 months!! Anyways this is delicious! Don Beto is a master and this is a very well made Mezcal. Caramel, raisins, dates, vanilla bean, peanuts, and blueberry jam. Yum!

El Jolgorio Espadin

Jun 26, 2021

Edition 04 from 2005. Ignacio Parada. I’m really surprised this wasn’t amazing. I am a big fan of this Mezcalero, but this was just average in my opinion. Very little flavor and actually a bit harsh which was surprising considering how long it spent in glass. Oh well, can’t win them all I guess.

La Higuera Cucharilla

Jun 23, 2021

Whoa!!! This is crazy floral!! Fabric softener, plumeria, jasmine, Abba Zaba candy bar, banana taffy, a very aromatic apple, canned pears in syrup, nutmeg, and cedar chest. I’m really liking this one!!
