After reading the reviews I was really excited to taste a Mezcal with pepperoni notes, but even though it smells a bit like cured meats I didn’t really get that on the palate. It’s very good though! Very light and clean. Pineapple, maple donut glaze, chocolate milk, green bell pepper, dried basil, and dried oregano.
Tabernas lll. I had this years ago and I remember not liking it. I don’t know if I’ve changed or this batch is better but I like this! It’s quite sweet but not cloying. Powdered sugar, kafir lime leaf, vanilla cupcake, and cold milk.
Sweet vanilla cake frosting, artichoke, cinnamon, chocolate powder, and allspice. Tasty.
What the…?!?! Somehow this is more mango then an actual mango. This is like you are sipping the entire mango plant. The skin, the seed, the flesh, the leaves, the earth that the tree is growing in. This is like taking a bite out of the ancestral god mango. I absolutely love this.
This is just beautiful. Light, herbal, and floral this is a real crowd pleaser. What a great example of what Agave Azul can taste like!! Apricots, frangipani flowers, fresh ripe mango, canned pears, lavender, and lemon verbena. I can already tell this bottle is going to go quick.
This is the third Sacatoro I’ve had from Guerrero and they’ve all had this delicious deep dark sweetness to them. Prune juice, Fig Newtons, fresh cut lumber, Mango Kerns Nectar, strawberry pie filling, and almond butter. I can’t wait for more Sacatoro Mezcals to hit the states! Guerrero makes some incredible Mezcal!!
Delicious! Drying tobacco leaves, dark brown sugar, mexican hot chocolate, Thompsons raisins, and pineapple syrup. I really want a full bottle of this one.
Lot 1LEC20. It’s really hard for me to rate this one. This is one of those chameleon Mezcals that changes flavors every time I taste it. I just sat down for the third time with this one and at first I taste leather and cinnamon oil, not the warm baking spices cinnamon that I taste often in Mezcals but the harsh spicy cinnamon oil we used to make cinnamon toothpicks with in grade school. Then as I scribble down my notes I take another sip and those flavors are gone and replaced with briny vegetal notes like green olives and green beans. On my third sip I taste rubber, burnt match, coconut flesh, and walnuts. As I finish my copita all I can taste is Apple Jolly Rancher. Crazy! I really enjoy tasting this one because it’s constantly challenging but I don’t see myself reaching for it too often. An extra point for uniqueness. I can’t wait to try future releases from this brand.
This one has a crazy light mouthfeel! It’s like it disappears as soon as it hits your mouth but leaves behind all the flavor. Someone in the tasting compared this effect to eating cotton candy and I think that nails it. Anyways the flavor is delicious!! Baked apple pie, allspice, clove, and pineapple jam. Unique and delicious.
Solid Madrecuishe! All the flavors you want and expect from this Agave. I got pound cake, vanilla cupcakes, and tons of watermelon. Really nice.
Whoa! Crazy flavors coming out of this one!! It reminds me of those flakey almond candies. Marzipan, Amaretto, Dr. Pepper. Also a deep dark dried fruit finish like raisins, and fruit rollups. This is great!!
Lot 002-MP. Yum!! Both Masparillo Mezcals I’ve had have been delicious!! This is similar to the Amormata/Lamata but less ashy and earthy. Bbq pineapple, clay dust, and tons of mint flavors, like menthol cigarettes. I also love the mini cement tahona wheel bottle cap. I want to try more from this brand!
Lot 5. This is very woody tasting and a bit bitter. Like walking into an antique furniture store, varnish and all. Big sandalwood notes, bamboo, burdock root, gentian root, and menthol. It’s off putting at first but the more I sip it, the more I like it. All of the Sotoleros expressions are interesting and different, this is no exception.
Update 5/22
This has really improved in the bottle!!! It’s lost all bitterness and is now dried herbs, pine needles, incense, menthol, raspberries, and apples. So much better!!
I’ve added a star to my initial review.
Lot 1. Totally agree with the leather and lime notes from Tyler. I love this Agave and La Luna does a great job with it. It’s fruity and herbal and the flavors are deep and strong. Pineapple, spearmint, thyme, sage, key lime, and leather jacket. Delicious.
Soft and balanced with flavors of banana, limeaid, No 2 pencil, spearmint, pineapple, and hierba santa. Tasty.
I LOVE this!!! I am a long way past the days when I thought Espadin was inferior to other Agaves. In the last couple of years I’ve had so many incredible spirits made from Agave Angustifolia from all over Mexico that I’m always excited to try a new one. This is an incredible Espadin. I’ve never tasted such a chocolate bomb before. To me this is just layers and layers of different chocolate flavors. It’s like gooey chocolate cupcakes topped with chocolate frosting and covered with hot chocolate powder!! Also cinnamon, sawdust, ripe mission figs, and macadamia nuts. I’m so bummed that this bottle is so small!! This and the Mal Bien Zacatoro are my favorite Mezcals of the year so far, these black label Mal Biens are insane. I can’t wait to see what comes next!!!
After my first sip I immediately thought of jelly beans, not any particular flavor but like I took a handful of mixed jelly beans and crammed them into my mouth and started chewing. Normally artificial tasting fruit flavors in Mezcal turn me off but it really works in this one. I like this a lot! It’s unique and I keep coming back to figure out what I’m tasting. So far I taste jelly beans, barbecue sauce, rye bread, and tarragon. What an interesting Espadin.
Oh man. This one has a deep custardy sweetness that is just delicious. Mincemeat pie, bourbon brown butter bread pudding, banana pudding, salted caramel, and creme brûlée. Tasty.
This is tasty and tropical with big butterscotch notes. Also stewed pears, mango nectar, Sunny D, honeydew melon, vanilla bean and roses. There’s a flavor in the background that is very mineral and metallic like old rusty pipes.
Tepextate used to be my favorite Agave. There’s something about that intensely green flavor that just punches me in the face, in a good way. Over the years my tastes have changed and I can’t really say that I have a favorite Agave anymore, but then this little gem came along and reminded me of what this incredible long lived Agave can do in the hands of a master. There is a LOT of flavor in this one!! It’s also flawless. Aniceto took his time and made this with love and care and it shows. Fresh jalapeños and green bell peppers along with handfuls of fresh wet mint leaves. Cucumber peels, and kiwis, ending in a beautiful finish of strawberry cream soda. Why oh why didn’t I buy two bottles!!
