I am a urologist in Austin,Texas. My wife is from Guanajuato and she has taught me to love the culture of Mexico. Already having a passion for high end and well made tequila it was only natural to transition the much more interesting world of mezcal.

Marfa Spirits Sotol (80 Proof)

Aug 27, 2022

Fresh cut hay and barnyard really define this. This was the 40% ABV batch. It’s good but the dilution from. 45% leave it with nothing special on the finish. I will be looking for the higher ABV batch to sample

5 Sentidos Pichomel

Dec 19, 2021

Batch PCH05-20, 168 bottles, 45.01%ABV. Wow! What a fruit bomb, especially ripe bananas and cantaloupe. So different from the agave Marmorata spirits that come out of Oaxaca. No chili peppers here! Finishes with some subtle earthy leather undertones. You can almost taste the labor of love that went into making this. This small batch gem from Puebla should be sought out and given a try

5 Sentidos Jabali

Aug 13, 2020

Batch 3, 2018. Beautiful aromas of papaya and ripe pears! I can enjoy the nose on this all day. Very nice mouthfeel with fresh fruit, new leather and a faint whisper of wet earth on the finish. Opens up nicely in the glass with some time. Has definitely improved since I first opened the bottle a number of months ago

Real Minero Largo, Becuela

May 12, 2020

Another winner from Eduardo! Fresh ripe bananas on the initial nose but more earthy clay notes when I came back to it after some time in the glass. The palate has some crisp green pepper notes and a little but of heat which I imagine is from the 13% Becuela ( think Tepextate). Opens up beautifully in the copita over time. Worth searching out

La Luna Manso Sahuayo

Apr 28, 2020

Fanta orange soda! With hints of Romano cheese on the nose. Sweet and creamy. Quite unlike any other typical agave spirit. Reminds me of a very subtle orange liqueur on the palate with some lime on the finish. Well worth looking for this if you want something different.

5 Sentidos Pechuga de Papalote

Mar 22, 2020

Wow! A very interesting Pechuga that has got everything going for it on the nose. A sweet chocolate mole, fresh warm pumpkin pie, coriander and anise. Take your time with this. Each sip brings something new.

Rey Campero Coyote

Jan 22, 2020

October 2016. Bottle 21/180. Very nice nose with overripe cantaloupe and fresh leather. Grassy notes on the palate with a crisp, sharp finish. Worth the effort to find this small batch release

5 Sentidos Espadin Capon

Jan 12, 2020

Batch 01-19, 355 bottles. Reminds me of Dentyne gum or “ red hots” candy from years ago. Softly sweet with cinnamon. Some earthiness on the finish that I suspect is from the clay pot distillation. Really enjoying this one.

Bozal Castilla

Sep 2, 2019

Really enjoying this one! Has wet dirt and barnyard on the initial nose that lasts throughout the pour. Lots of subtle fruit flavors including mango and ripe cantaloupe. Herbs and mild serrano peppers on the finish. There is a lot going on here. A must try if you see it. Lot 217 from Jan 2017

Real Minero Barril, Madrecuishe

Jul 25, 2019

Very tasty! The 59% Barril in this blend is evident up front with dark chocolate notes and leather. The 41% Madrecuishe comes in for the finish with some herbal minerality. Faint floral notes of fresh roses in the background mixed with wet clay. I am enjoying this one very much. Well worth searching for if you happen to be in Austin or San Antonio where this was released. Bottle 01/78.

Mezonte Michoacan – Jorge Perez

May 28, 2019

First nose with a little funk but then turns to sweet flavors of fresh pears and mild mint. Very tasty and quite different. Really enjoyed this new release from rare agave Alto. May have to look hard to find a bottle of this small batch gem

5 Sentidos Espadin-Tobaziche

Mar 21, 2019

Really nice! Starts off with bubble gum and an initial sweetness. Opens up with faint brisket flavors and cooked artichoke. Nice finish with slightly astringent wet dirt that I assume is from the clay distillation. Look forward to more of these very small batches from Tío Pedro Hernández

Lalocura Cuishe

Mar 14, 2019

Ripe bananas and creme brûlée that transitions into wet leaves and dirt after the first taste. I think it is the clay distillation coming through. Very enjoyable. Lot 08. 4-4.5 stars

El Jolgorio Tobaziche

Mar 2, 2019

Edition 5/2017/350 bottles/48%ABV.
Just like previous editions of this mezcal, it is very grassy on the nose with hints of lime. Wet pine needles also comes through. A little hotter on the finish than I would have expected for 48%. Very enjoyable overall

El Jolgorio Jabali

Mar 2, 2019

Edition 3/2018/275 bottles/ 50.3%ABV. Wow! This is good. Nose full of hot Serrano peppers. Spicy on the palate also. Bold and forward, this one keeps on coming. Vanilla rounds out the finish. One of my favorite expressions of Jabali

Don Mateo Alto

Jan 18, 2019

Pine, mint , and earth. This unique mezcal is very enjoyable. I agree that it would be a good choice to start the night with. This is one of the best I have tasted coming out of Michoacán. Lot 18 from Nov 2015

Vago Madre Cuixe – Emigdio Jarquin Ramirez

Jan 18, 2019

Just found this in the back depths of my collection unopened until now. From May 2016 by Emigdio Jarquín Ramírez. Initially very vegetal and grassy evolving into minerals after a few minutes in glass. Another fine example of madrecuixe that I like but am not blown away by. 3 1/2 – 4 stars. Lot E-08 MC-16

El Jolgorio Coyote

Dec 10, 2018

Edition 2, 2017, bottle 41/150. Complex and deep. Fresh soft leather on the nose with earthy undertones. Take your time with this one…. it deserves it. A must try , if you can find it.

Real Minero Largo, Espadin, Coyota, Becuela, Tobala

Nov 16, 2018

Wow! When you consider all the labor that went into making this mezcal, it’s hard not to be in awe when first tasting it. This wonderful ensamblé starts off with sweet cinnamon and leather notes. Then comes the soft mint and fruit flavors. It finishes with a wet clay earthiness and subtle coffee aromas. There is a lot going on here with all the different unique agaves in this bland. Amazingly smooth with no burn despite a whopping 54% ABV. Congratulations Edgar Angeles Carreño, Don Lorenzo would be proud! Batch ARM-01,2017, 242 bottles

Rey Campero Castilla

Sep 22, 2018

Full and rich upfront with a dry sweet nose. Lots of minerals on the palate , slate and somewhat citrus on the finish. Nice wild agave flavors for this mezcal produced in Nov 2015 and likely rested in glass until it’s current release. Bottle 6/310.
