This spirit hits you in the face like a ton of bricks. Hot and heavy as hell, there is no mid-palate on this ride, and no seatbelts or safety harnesses either. A lot different than Cuixe’s im used to. Hibiscus, rose petals, and some paint thinner. Not what I was expecting at all. Will revisit after oxygen has had time with this pour. RIP Aquilino
Cant help but break this open early. One of the better Tobala’s ive had. Double Bubble, saddle blanket, thyme and peaches. Well integrated, smooth as silk.
Dear lord I wish they made candles out of the nose on this one! Creme brulee, nutmeg, banana leaves to start. Mid palate follows up quickly thereafter with more of the same including some cinnamon and a bit of heat from the alcohol. If you would have made me guess, I would have thought this one was over 100 proof. Finish is long… and even a minute or two after the last sip, I can still taste some of this incredible elixir.
Really different profile for an espadin. Not for me.
Tons of rubber, some rauchbier qualities, a little bacon, and some barnyard funk. Really really musty… like a wet basement. Not diggin it
Very pungent. One of the few mezcals where taste and smell are one. Strange “new car smell” type of smell and taste. Finish is rust/dried blood type of taste. The more I drink, the less I like this one. Closer to 3.25/5
Somewhere between 3.5 – 3.75. At $36, its very good. Creamed corn, eucalyptus, cream cheese. Worth buying a bottle
Every sip I get something different, but maybe not in a good way. Also, this dram is prickly as all get out, and harsh on both the palate and the swallow. Glad I didnt buy a bottle. Not my bag.
Full bodied, oily. Punches you in the face. Slight harshness on the finish. Just ok
3.75/5
Balanced, some nuance. Cream cheese and peaches. Solid. A go-to of the price was lower
I know there will be a parade of 5 stars following this review, but I dont consider it perfect for my tastes. Ive had this iteration from Erick’s label, as well as the Wahaka VdM series. It IS wonderful. Brie, squash, cilantro, kiwi, ginger, and juicy fruit… maybe. I dunno, its very complex. The finish is the only thing keeping this one from a perfect score. Its harsh, peppery, and I detect a slight taste of Red Hots candy (which I loathe).
However, that being said, I wish I had another bottle at home. I enjoy it for sure.
Somewhere between 4.5 and 4.75. Other than Berta’s Mexicano, this may be a new favorite from MM. Sandalwood and oak on the nose, herbs and grain with some orange zest. Olive oil thickness. Wonderful!!!!
Peeked ahead to next months MM release…. Tobaziche, one of my favorite varietals. This is exceptional… wheatgrass, plum, Mrs Butterworths syrup, green apple. Dang this has a lot going on! Wish this particular release was bigger than a 375.
Funky. Lotta double bubble bubble gum, chamomile, lavender. I really dont get much Jabali, imo. I’d hit it again, but not really gonna seek this out, per se
Complex for sure, but all over the place… and not in a good way. Wood up front, followed by musty army surplus, then a left turn into bitter campari-like tones and rhubarb. Gonna need some time to digest this one, but for now, 3.5/5
Summertime post-rain. Dusty country roads. Central Texas BBQ. Wildflowers in March. Jammin
Stone fruit and pear, some smoke, oil and fusel notes on finish. Enjoyable but nothing id buy again
One of the awesome things about Maguey Melate is that one month you may get something you dont really dig, but the next month you may get an absolute gem. Well, this is the latter. Opens with rose hips, hibiscus, prickly pear…. mid palate is rock candy. Finish is cooked agave with slight vanilla. Up there with Semei’s Arroqueno and Bertas Mexicano for best of MM thus far. Fun!
Not getting anything other than a decently made espadin. If you would have blindfolded me, I would have guessed the same. Ok
