Boy oh boy. New Years Eve, Esquire Tavern, San Antonio. Slick, full bodied green apple and cilantro with a touch of mango on the finish. An excellent mezcal to close out the decade with.
Tried when Silvia came to Houston as part of Mezcaloteca’s Texas tour. Oh baby… if you like herbs and spice, this is your jam. Mezcaloteca can do no wrong right now
Bottle 28/400. Was expecting much more mediocrity based on prior reviews, but actually really digging this bottle. Doesnt punch you in the face with smoke, heat, or cooked agave, but pleasant enough to take you on a short ride. Only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is the short finish. Very very well done
Classic tobala notes. Sweetgum, pinon, and a long pappys-pipe finish. Very good, but hits like a note or two on the piano… not a whole concierto
Absolutely excellent. Maybe 5 stars, i dunno. Im drunk at Comedor, Austin TX. Absolutely incredible mezcal
Christmas in a glass. Crazy pine, herbs, baking spices. Not my jam, but respectable
Funky, a little strange for an espadin. Still searching for more words
Almost no chicken, but a lot of fruit
Pretty tasty but doesnt live up to the hype
Sweet. Herbal. Almost too sweet… keeping it from being closer to a 4.5 for me
Very good, best of the Palenqueros line
Closer to 4.25. Tobaziche is my favorite varietal, and this mezcal is what I would call an interesting take on that. Not even sure I would have guess this as a karwinskii if I was given this blind. Hard to describe… but another fun mezcal from 5 senses
Bottle at La Viuda Negra in Dallas. Echo a lot of the sentiments below. Leather and sweetgrass. Very interesting considering the agaves/percentages involved. Outstanding for the price. Try it
2019 distillation. Real straightforward… not sure if its just real simple or my taste buds are fried because its the end of the night. Enjoyable but will revisit
Pechuga De Brisket. Las Almas Rotas
Solid, but no brisket flavor to speak of. Glad I didnt buy a bottle? Would love if they tried it again
Best offering ive had from Chacolo. Hard to believe this isnt an ensamble because its so complex. Wow. Like a meandering mountain road… im still not sure the finish has faded and its been an hour or so
Las Perlas Austin still has a bottle of this. Old army surplus goods up front, antique store nose, and different dirt-like waves on the palate. Different. Interesting, but not sure I could drink this all night long.
Another winner from 5 Sentidos. More grassy/herbaceous than some of their other offerings, but dances on the tongue like a tobaziche or madre. Finish is burlap sack, green onions, and fruit
Was expecting a let down but really impressed by this one. Smells more like a karwinskii but taste is like a funky espadin. Pine, saddle blanket, and some mango. Extremely good
Had Chacolo twice before (once in the Wahaka VdM series and the other being a bottle procured from Mis Mezcales in CDMX)…. not this Ensamble though. Sweet corn on the nose, some fresh cut grass and limestone up front, followed by smoke and apricots. Delicious
Spice… a lotta spice. Brown sugar, nutmeg, arbol chiles. Taste doesnt follow the smell. Still not sure about this one. 3.75/5
